Helpful, but not so thorough

Well, I'm a fresh grad and was a little confused when I first bought this book, not really knowing what to do with my life. So, I was seeking for coaching and inspirations, and this book with some great reviews came to me. Overall, the book does what it claimed. The author provided me 25 steps to realizing my dream and my goal by asking questions and questions so that I got to reflect on my self. It helped me create some workbook on my career path, and I was quite satisfied with the result. I got to know my self a little better.

However, what I actually dislike about this book is that it's too abstract for me. Some ideas are not so practical and somehow sounded dreamy (which may be inspiring for some people but not just the coaching I was looking for). So, if you are looking for some specific, practical, directional books, this one may not be for you. But if you need some mental boost and sparkling inspirations, you may want to consider this one :)

Henri writes about finding your Passion!

It is not a quick read of 25 Questions, but more a work book to discover Yourself! Your Passions! and then put together the steps necessary to find out who and what your are looking for in yourself.

Henri discovered at a young age it is not about the Money, The world and Travel, but digging deep to discover "What floats your boat".

As I read the first 6 chapters, I thought about my journal and the blank pages, the Video camera and the lack of recordings and just my own personal level of procrastination and lack of staying with a plan to get THERE.

We are often EXPERTS at sloughing through life and getting by.

So if you need to shake your tree and get out bed with an ELAN for live. Then this book is written for action, reading each Question and putting to paper your thoughts, dreams, desires and creating YOUR Future.

This book is a nice exercise in how to achieve a dream you already have, but if you are still looking for your passion, or feel adrift, this book will not help you find it.

About the Author
Gérard Cliquet is Professor of Marketing at the Institute of Business Administration (IGR-IAE) of the University of Rennes 1, France and Director of the Center for Research in Economics and Management (CREM), France. He is the author of eight books and numerous articles in national and international journals in the marketing and retailing fields.

"Dr D Jeya Mala is currently Associate Professor in Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, with a rich teaching and research experience of more than 12 years. She has been teaching courses like Object Oriented Analysis and Design (OOAD), Software Engineering and Software Testing. She has successfully guided numerous Software Development-based projects for The Great Mind Challenge (TGMC) contest, an Academic Initiative of IBM. As a researcher, she has investigated the practical aspects of Software Engineering and Object Oriented Paradigms for effective software development. Her work on Software Testing has fetched several grants from the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Major Research Project scheme. In addition, Dr Jeya Mala is a member of the Computer Society of India (CSI) and an invited member of the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE). She holds a vital role in forming the reviewers’ board in journals like IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, Elsevier–Information Sciences, and International Journal of Metaheuristics, among others. She has also been listed in Marquis Who’s Who List in 2011. Dr S Geetha is currently Associate Professor in Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai. The Aeneid (/ɨˈniːɪd/; Latin: Aenēis [ae̯ˈneːɪs]) is a Latin epic poem, written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BC, that tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who travelled to Italy, where he became the ancestor of the Romans. It comprises 9,896 lines in dactylic hexameter. The first six of the poem's twelve books tell the story of Aeneas's wanderings from Troy to Italy, and the poem's second half tells of the Trojans' ultimately victorious war upon the Latins, under whose name Aeneas and his Trojan followers are destined to be subsumed. The hero Aeneas was already known to Greco-Roman legend and myth, having been a character in the Iliad, composed in the 8th century BC. Virgil took the disconnected tales of Aeneas's wanderings, his vague association with the foundation of Rome and a personage of no fixed characteristics other than a scrupulous pietas, and fashioned this into a compelling founding myth or national epic that at once tied Rome to the legends of Troy, explained the Punic wars, glorified traditional Roman virtues and legitimized the Julio-Claudian dynasty as descendants of the founders, heroes and gods of Rome and Troy.

Starred Review. Princeton scholar Fagles follows up his celebrated Iliad and Odyssey with a new, fast-moving, readable rendition of the national epic of ancient Rome. Virgil's long-renowned narrative follows the Trojan warrior Aeneas as he carries his family from his besieged, fallen home, stops in Carthage for a doomed love affair, visits the underworld and founds in Italy, through difficult combat, the settlements that will become, first the Roman republic, and then the empire Virgil knew. Recent translators (such as Allen Mandelbaum) put Virgil's meters into English blank verse. Fagles chooses to forgo meter entirely, which lets him stay literal when he wishes, and grow eloquent when he wants: "Aeneas flies ahead, spurring his dark ranks on and storming/ over the open fields like a cloudburst wiping out the sun." A substantial preface from the eminent classicist Bernard Knox discusses Virgil's place in history, while Fagles himself appends a postscript and notes. Scholars still debate whether Virgil supported or critiqued the empire's expansion; Aeneas' story might prompt new reflection now, when Americans are already thinking about international conflict and the unexpected costs of war. Fagles's new version of Virgil's epic delicately melds the stately rhythms of the original to a contemporary cadence. Having previously produced well-received translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey, he illuminates the poem's Homeric echoes while remaining faithful to Virgil's distinctive voice. Pious Aeneas, passionate Dido, and raging Turnus are driven by the desires and rivalries of the gods-but even the gods recognize their obeisance to fate, and to the foretold Roman Empire that will produce Augustus, Virgil's patron. The excellent introduction, by Bernard Knox, gives historical and literary context, and both Knox and Fagles convincingly argue the epic's continuing relevance. Fagles, writing of Virgil's sense of "the price of empire," notes that "it seems to be a price we keep on paying, in the loss of blood and treasure, time-worn faith and hard-won hope, down to the present day."

Very readable

There is no such thing as a "best" translation, only translations that suit one's purpose. If you want to read the Aeneid as a gripping story, Fagles's version does very well. I have just finished reading book 4, and Dido's fury, as set against the implacable higher purpose of Aeneas, has perhaps never been as vividly, even scarily, portrayed.

On the other hand, it could be argued that Fagles's verse does not convey the stately or epic quality of the Latin in the way that, for instance, Fitzgerald's does. A short comparison may suffice:

"sed nullis ille mouetur / fletibus aut uoces ullas tractabilis audit; / fata obstant placidasque uiri deus obstruit auris." (Vergil)

"But no tears move Aeneas now. / He is deaf to all appeals. He won't relent. / The Fates bar the way / and heaven blocks his gentle, human ears." (Fagles)

"But no tears moved him, no one's voice would he / Attend to tractably. The fates opposed it; / God's will blocked the man's once kindly ears." (Fitzgerald)

Fitzgerald's version is closer to the Latin (other than not using the present tense), better reflects its formal nature, and achieves a Vergilian metrical effect with the three successive beats of "God's will blocked." But Fagles's free and fluid rendition is undoubtedly more engaging to the modern reader.

Occasionally Fagles does introduce a modern idiom that is trite or jarring. For instance, when the sea-nymph speeds Aeneas's ship on its way in Book 10, she does so skillfully ("haud ignara modi") because she "knows the ropes".

The book has a useful introduction, a few notes, and a pronouncing glossary. Fagles's postscript is, however, a tedious pastiche of quotations from previous critics and could have been omitted.

The "other" side of the Trojan war

Publius Vergilius Maro was commisioned by Caesar Augustus to author a national epic for Rome. The work which Virgil composed for this purpose was the Aeneid. It is an epic poem that tells the story of a minor character from Homer's Iliad who leads a rag-tag band from the smouldering ruins of Troy in order to found a "New Troy" to the west: Rome. It is in the Aeneid, not the Iliad (as most people who have not read the works tend to believe) that we see the spectacle of the Trojan Horse & the famous line "I do not trust Greeks bearing gifts." The Iliad ends with the death of Hektor - before the plan of the Trojan Horse is devised by Odysseus. The Odyssey picks up after the sack of Troy. The Aeneid fills in the gaps & narrates the story of the few Trojans who escape the wrath of the Greeks. According to legend, Romulus & Remes (the two brothers who eventually founded the city itself) were descendents of Aeneas. As is usual, Fitzgerald's translation is top notch. I have read Mandelbaum's rendition as well & much prefer Mr. Fitzgerald. The book also contains a useful glossary & postscript which help elucidate the allusions to Hannibal & Cleopatra which the Romans of Virgil's day would have picked up right away, but which might be unfamiliar to modern day readers. Also, it is HIGHLY recommended that one read the Iliad & the Odyssey before embarking on Virgil's work. [...] But, for a quick answer: the reason that Juno (Hera in the Greek) has a vendetta against Aeneas is due to the fact that he is Trojan. This all derives from the judgment of Paris when Juno was "jilted" by the bribe that Aphrodite offered Paris (also a Trojan). To offer any more info at this point would be too great of a digression, but what I will say is that this work is NOT (I repeat NOT) for someone to merely pick up & dive into w/out doing his or her pre-requisite reading. Do your homework, become familiar with the myths & tales of what has gone on before, then read the Aeneid. You will be glad you did, for this is an extraordinary epic. Also, for those who harbor the ambition, the university of Oxford professor Peter Levi has recently written a wonderful, succinct biography of Virgil. "The Death Of Virgil" by Hermann Broch is a mind-blowing masterpiece as well. Indeed, one can never get enough Virgil.

imagine that he almost burned it

Although Virgil spent years writing the Aeneid, by his death, he felt that it was imperfect and asked that it be burned. Luckily for all concerned, his request was denied or we'd never have this epic. If you are new to Greek and Roman epics, I'd recommend starting with the Iliad and the Odyssey first. Not only will most novices find them more readable (especially the Odyssey), any reader will pick up important background information that will help immeasurably in following the Aeneid. Although I'm a huge fan of the Aeneid and have read many of the books in the original Latin, I'd suggest to most readers just to read books 1,2,4 and 6 unless you are really drawn in. It's not that the other books are not great (they are), it's just that unless you are a specialist, you won't want to read all about the battles and extra stuff -- book 4 is the love story of Dido and Aeneus and for many is the highlight of the poem. Book 6 is the trip to to the underworld which is so important to later writers and poets like Dante, TS Eliot, etc.... The fall of Troy is contained in books 1 and 2. I enjoy Fitzgerald's translation, but as an amateur Latinist, I prefer Allan Mandelbaum's translation with Moser's illustrations. When I was translating from the Latin, only Mandelbaum was so close to the original that he could help a student. I think Mandelbaum is a genius for rendering the poem so close to the original. It's unfair to call him wooden -- Virgil wrote the whole thing in Dacytlic hexameter which is hardly wooden in Latin, although it can be repetitive at times. Not to worry -- he used a lot of spondaic substititions (altering a long, short short with a long, long) to vary the meter.
So, if you just want a taste, read books 1,2,4 and 6 and if you love it, by all means read the whole epic.

Life Is Cheap In The Hands Of Hitler's Barbarians

This book by author Rupert Butler is a fairly quick read (185 pages of text) revealing the barbarity of members of Hitler's Third Reich in carrying out executions of millions of individuals. Numerous photos of the infamous characters both in their heyday and death add to the book's interest. Incidents such as the assassination of The Butcher of Prague, Reinhard Heydrich, and the July, 1944 bomb plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler are given detailed attention. I'm sure the text of this book can be found in many other volumes, but the photos chosen for the book are exceptional. Examples are the sinister Heydrich cuddling his youngest daughter, the destruction of the village of Lidice in reprisal of the death of Heydrich, Judge Roland Freisler showering venom onto a pathetic defendant at the People's Court, the ruins of the inside of the conference room at Rastenburg following the attempt on Hitler's life, close up pictures of Hitler's henchmen, some of them shown in death, and the ruins inside Hitler's bunker. These and many other photos make this book a keeper in the library of World War II buffs.

A solid work on the dreaded Gestapo.

This is an excellent book which reads easily and never bores. The format of the book is well thought out, with many pictures, quotes, and sub-stories. The author's writing style is engaging and I could not put the book down once I started. The book's main focus is on the leading figures of the Gestapo to include Goring, Himmler, Heydrich and Kaltenbrunner and on the interagency politics between the Abwehr, SD, SS, and the Wehrmacht. Butler certainly pulls no punches, revealing the brutality of the Gestapo and the depravity of the mass murderers who led this twisted organization. While this book is well done, it is not an authoritative work and does not address Gestapo activities in areas such as the eastern front, the Baltics, and the Balkans. However, what the book does cover, it covers well. If you want a solid foundation on the Gestapo's activities in WWII then this is the book for you. I am glad I bought it and will retain it in my collection.

Picture book, not a history

Rupert Butler basically compiled a bunch of photos, added a little commentary about key members of the organization and said this was a history. This is not in fact a book about the Gestapo, but a group of biographical episodes tied together with a few events. There is not a single organizational chart or information on ranks, training, equipment - things normally associated with an organization. He provides some information of operations and then rapidly moves towards a conclusion with the end of the war and the trials for war crimes. Very disappointed.

About the Author
Robert Bothwell is a professor of history and director of the International Relations Program at the University of Toronto. He has written books on a wide variety of topics in Canadian history, from atomic energy (Eldorado: Canada's National Uranium Company and Nucleus) to French–English relations (Canada and Quebec) to Canadian–American relations (Canada and the United States).

Extremely informative and readable text

This is an outstanding one-volume work of Canadian history. Bothwell displays an expertise in analyzing the complicated and nuanced economic activities among the provinces and between the emerging Canadian sovereign state and other nations. The author demonstrates a keen understanding of nuanced trade agreements between Canada and Britain from mercantilist days to the present. He also explains with great clarity the relationship between Canada and the American colossus to the South.

Bothwell provides a comprehensive look at Canadian history from prehistoric times to the present Harper administration. He covers the migrations of the French and British with an appropriate amount of details. He describes the wars for empire and the effects that European migration had on the native peoples. He also delineates the different approach of settlers from England and those from France. He gives enlightening coverage of the Metis community.

A main highlight of this book is the abundance of credible information about the relations between the French-speaking residents of Quebec and the English-speaking majority in Canada. This relationship has caused tension and uneasiness and has been a headache for Canadian politicians to deal with. Bothwell points out the sources of controversy and gives a balanced account that articulates the views of both communities and all representative special interest groups.

Bothwell writes an interesting narrative. He describes the accomplishments and shortcomings of the important Canadian political leaders, such as MacKenzie King, Lester Pearson, Pierre Trudeau,and Brian Mulroney. The work is largely free of ideological bias. There is little editorializing and the author does a good job of presenting both sides of controversial topics.

The work focuses mostly on trade, economics, and politics. Cultural history is not broached in great detail. This is one drawback of the book. However, the author makes up for this by writing is a lively, energetic, and passionate manner. He is a clear communicator and gives essential information in a way that is informative and entertaining.

Overall, this is an excellent book. It is a surprisingly quick read. The author does a great job of providing essential information and leaving out unnecessary details. The book is written with expertise and passion. The author is a talented wordsmith and the work is outstanding from a literary standpoint.

An eye for Canada`s Ironies

This version of Canada`s story moves at a brisk, entertaining pace through the ages of colonization, nation-forming, and the perils of the twentieth-century. Bothwell shows a keen eye for irony, noting, for example, how French Canada`s loyalty to its British conquerors was bolstered when 50 priests from Old France arrived, fleeing the French Revolution to preach devotion for church and king. The choice of narrative details is objective, but often gives scope for critical humor: ``Pearson signed the North Atlantic treaty, creating the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Washington on April Fool`s Day, 1949, while the U.S. Marine Band played a selection of popular tunes including ``I`ve Got Plenty of Nothin`.``

The book gives substantial treatment to recent history, with its battles over free trade, NAFTA, the attempted Meech Lake revision of the constitution, the Quebec independence referendum of 1995, and Canada`s role in global issues of genocide or the war on terror. In the hindsight of recent events, Bothwell points out developments which drew little attention when they occurred: ``St. Laurent stoutly defended to the skeptical and neutralist Indians the good intentions of the United States, even when it meant that the Americans were arming India`s neighbor Pakistan -- in the interest of anti-communism.``

Excellent overview of Canadian history

I recommend this book to all readers, but particularly to fellow US citizens for its invaluable gift of relating Canada's history to our own. There are ways in which it tells us more about pre-revolutionary and revolutionary history than you will find in most US texts.

For Canadians, this flyover may do insufficient justice to some critical aspects of the nation's history, but it still serves as an important overview. It is not just a political history, but delves deeply into the economic and social changes that shaped the Canada we know today.

Few history books qualify as page turners, but this comes close.
