David Myers is the John Dirk Werkman Professor of Psychology at Hope College where he has taught for the past 30 years.  David Myers' love of teaching psychology has been rewarded by students on many occasions with numerous “Outstanding Professor” awards.  An award-winning researcher, Dr. Myers received the Gordon Allport Prize from Division 9 of the American Psychological Association for his work on group polarization.  His scientific articles have appeared in more than two dozen journals, including Science, American Scientist, Psychological Bulletin, and Psychological Science.  He has served his discipline as consulting editor to the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

A Little Honesty About 10th vs. 11th...

The 9th, 10th and 11th editions of this incredible textbook are all unexpected gems, particularly for self study. I'm an Engineer and in addition to robotics in the classroom, I design educational animations around various math, chemistry, physics, etc. formulas.

The astonishing thing about this textbook is that, although it is purportedly a Social Psych text, the pedagogy is centered around intelligent learners - students (frankly, I also look at this from the viewpoint of AI!) designing, testing and implementing their own learning strategies. Again unabashedly, it outshines MANY if not MOST Educational Psych and Instructional Design texts from this viewpoint alone!

Now the bad stuff. Like many publishers, new editions are regularly churned out, and students pay the price. As I evaluated the 10th vs. 11th editions side by side, I can't sincerely agree with reviewers who dismiss this new fine gem offhand as "the same." It simply ISN'T if you check the references, studies and bib, There are NUMEROUS updates with more current research, and many new web resources.

But the big BUT. Although the differences are far from cosmetic, they ARE generally academic. The next dimension is to take them in the context of price, where you can get a like new/ good used 10th for 10 bucks US vs. paying $130 to $180 for EITHER 10th or 11th new!!! I don't know about you, but I'm on a budget, and that is far from a trivial difference in price. In fact, I think I can say without exaggeration that it might be a buy/don't buy deal breaker for autodidacts.

SO, if you MUST use this as a class requirement, I've seen them selling back on instant book cash dot com and amazon buy backs - credits for a good (70 to 90%) recoup, and the material is the best you can buy. However, if you HAVE a choice, I unhesitatingly recommend the 10 edition instead, from an Amazon or Abe books third party, especially for self study. For requirements, there also is the rental option in addition to the sell backs.

NOTE: I would expand the potential audience for either of these outstanding editions to ANYONE with an interest in online or classroom education and tutorials. The pedagogic material is so well done, you can use it as an instructional design template for MANY of your other topics, as I do in my limited case of learning STEM via animation and robotics. Highly Recommended with above constraints! You can't go wrong with either, let your budget be your guide!

About the Author

Dr. Mark P. Pritchard serves as professor of Marketing in the College of Business at Central Washington University. Dr. Jeffrey L. Stinson is Chair of the Department of Management and Director of the Northwest Center for Sport Business (NWCSB) at Central Washington University. With a Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of Oregon, Dr. Stinson has primarily researched the influence of intercollegiate athletics on athletic and academic fundraising to colleges and universities. Other research interests include donor decision-making, non-profit fundraising, and social marketing in sport.

Good ideas for building junker models

As with all scale model books, there are some new ideas in here, even for older builders. The format of the book is basic, but with color pictures. The model used to explain how to apply these techniques is a 1950 chevy pickup. (unfortunately, the Ford on the cover is not detailed in the book :-(.

This book goes along with their website, which they refer too, but if you did not have web access, then that's an even better reason to pickup this book. Junk model cars can be fun to build, especially when you don't have to worry about a polished paint job.

It may seem a bit thin for the price to some. But I am glad to have in my library.

Waste of money

The authors spend a lot of time instructing you how to perfectly prepare a body for paint. But they spend minimal time explaining how to weather the model, which is why I thought they wrote the book. Even when they discuss the weathering technique, the instructions are vague and incomplete. I'm sure they had good intent, but fell far short of explaining how to make junk model cars. Buy at your own risk.

Generally there is not enough information or instructions to make this book worth while. The information and writing are both shoddy and incomplete. Other than for some nice photos this book is a waste of time and money.

The best troubleshooting guide for people who EC

I actually own the older ebook version of this, EC Simplified, but the nuts and bolts are still very similar. So glad it's now on Kindle!

Andrea sets up this book "backwards", meaning she shows you how to get started with ECing your baby first, then talks about the philosophy and history of infant hygiene later in the book. As a mom of a young baby, I find that very valuable. I enjoy reading, and I like background information on elimination communication, but sometimes when the baby is crying you just want to know what to do next!

One of the best pieces of advice in this book is to NOT let your baby go naked all of the time! There's a certain observation period where you watch their natural rhythms and signals to see when they'll go, but after that your baby has undies, a diaper, or pants on. The reason behind this is a lot of EC parents really locked onto the "diaper free" mentality, and found that their baby never had a miss (EC speak for accident) while naked, but the moment they were wearing clothes they would pee.

This book is very picture heavy, showing you all the various ways to hold and help your baby pee or poop without a diaper. At times, this book almost feels padded, like the pictures are there to make the book buyer feel like they're getting their moneys' worth. I mean, there are only so many ways to hold a babys bare bottom out so they can go! But for people who feel like they really need specific instruction in how to potty their baby, this is THE book for you.

Her tips on "generic timing" (times that a baby will probably go for you, given the opportunity) are some of the most helpful things in this book. Making sure baby has a chance to pee before and after you put him in the car seat, before and after naps, etc, really boosts the level of successful catches in the potty.

I've read most of the other available EC related books - Diaper Free Baby, Beyond the Sling, Diaper Free Before 3 - this one is the most specific guide available. And sometimes, when you're the only one for 50 miles putting your baby on a potty and can't ask your friends for advice, specific is exactly what you need.

A note - my baby will be 1 in a few days, and while I wouldn't say we're anywhere near ready to graduate to being potty independent, we have a lot of good days where almost everything goes in the potty. Then there are the other days! (That's normal too.)

My advice - Try EC, and read this book to make it easier on yourself. EC is not as scary or weird as it seems - you're just giving your baby the chance to go without letting his waste sit against his skin. Once you're aware of when your baby needs to go, why make them go in their pants? Good luck on your EC journey!

No excuse not to give EC a try after reading!

Andrea's godiaperfree.com site, podcasts, and her first book, "EC Simplified" were extremely helpful in getting my family started with Elimination Communication with my daughter, who was 8 months old at the time. Like other parents, I don't have a lot of time to read, so I really like the book structure that Andrea uses that allows the reader to quickly navigate to the guidance you need at the time you need it. Perfect for busy parents. She provides step-by-step advice on getting started, which is applicable to whether you're beginning at birth or any other time up to 18 months. Some of my favorite parts of the book are the sections on issues that you may encounter while practicing EC, such as Potty Pauses.

What I really like about Andrea's resources is her tone, which is upbeat and encouraging. She is a leader in the EC movement and knows what she's talking about, having EC'd her son and daugther from birth. She truly knows how to say things in a way that empowers you to give EC a try. After reading her book, I felt confident to start EC and am so glad we did. My only regret is that I had known about this book when my daughter was born so we could've started EC at birth (from birth to 4 months is the "optimal" time to start)! So if you are not a fan of changing diapers and don't like the idea of essentially encouraging your child to soil herself for 2+ years until it's time to start "traditional" potty training, I highly suggest giving EC a try with the aid of this book!

Excellent and Easy to Follow Guide on ECing

I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone and everyone who has a newborn or young child! I wish more people knew about ECing and how easy, simple, and effective it really is…this method makes potty training a breeze! I bought the book while I was pregnant; we started to notice his signals after he was just a few days old. We now are catching 95% of his poos and pees on the potty (and he is only 2 months old) …and he gets it, too…he totally tells us when he has to go…with a certain cry and groan. This book is so well written and explains how to do it with clear simple language, photos, and illustrations. She even has a gear guide for recommended items to use that make ECing easier. Don't hesitate! Get this book and get potty training today…you will be so grateful you did!

Comprehensive and mathematical treatment of digital video processing

Although published in 1995, this is still the book I come back to time and time again whenever I have a question about processing digital video. Unlike other titles, it is neither knee-deep in terse useless theory nor is it a book about which connector goes where in digital video. You might call it the Gonzalez & Woods of digital video processing, in honor of those authors' fabulous book on digital image processing. The book is organized into six parts:

Part 1- "Representation of Digital Video" consists of chapters 1 through 4. Chapter one is an introduction to both analog and digital video. Chapter 2 models the formation of time-varying images as perspective or orthographic projections of 3-D scenes with moving objects. Chapter 3 addresses the time-space sampling of 3-D lattices, which is what a progression of video frames actually is. Conversion between sampling structures without using motion information is tackled in chapter 4. This is the task of converting video from one format to another.

Part 2 - "Two Dimensional Motion Estimation" consists of chapters 5 through 8. Motion estimation is one of the most effective ways to utilize time redundancy in video frames, and this section discusses four ways to do this - optical flow, block-based methods, pel-recursive methods, and Bayesian methods.

Part 3 - "Three Dimensional Motion Estimation and Segmentation" consists of chapters 9 through 12. The models in this section can be used for either 3-D image analysis or for improved 2-D motion estimation. The two-view estimation techniques described in chapters 9 through 11 are based on optical flow and are very sensitive to small inaccuracies that are present. Thus the method of chapter 12 uses stereo pairs and motion tracking over long stereo sequences for more robust results.

Part 4 - "Video Filtering" consists of chapters 13 through 17. Video filtering differs from image filtering due to the motion information involved. Thus motion-compensated filtering is discussed in chapter 13. Motion-compensated filtering to reduce the graininess found in most "freeze-frame" images is discussed in chapter 14. Restoration of blurred video frames is the subject of chapter 15. Chapter 16 involves conversion between video standards and discusses frame/field up/down conversion and interlacing/deinterlacing techniques. Chapter 17 discusses a comprehensive model for low-resolution video acquisition and a framework for superresolution of video.

Parts 5 and 6, the remainder of the book, discuss still image compression and video compression respectively. These sections are detailed, but more recent developments in compression such as MPEG-4 and wavelets are omitted due to the age of the book.

The reader should already be familiar with image processing techniques as well as calculus, probability, matrix algebra, and some differential equations to get the most from this math-intensive book. However, the book is very detailed to the point that it is straight-forward to program solutions based on its contents. There are exercises at the conclusion of each chapter, but no solutions, since most of the exercises consist of essay-type questions or derivations. This seems odd since the book is very practical in its exposition, one would assume that the exercises would be more practical in scope. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in digital video processing.

Excellent book but require strong Math Background

This book is really good. Starting from the very first chapter, this book takes you into a very interesting world of digital video. It discusses MPEG video and the technology behind in some detail. This is for the people who want to know how digital video is created and the details about MPEG-2 video. The best part of the book is the Motion Estimation and Compensation portion...... Very high level of mathematical stuff is used in the book and hence will require some good reference books too....
