Originating at MIT, this is an engaging work that consists of many parts: instruction manual; graphic novel; science, art, math, and design book; and safety guide. It will motivate students to learn concepts and subjects such as physics, measurements, and lab safety through a fun, graphic novel format. The only drawbacks are some of the hard-to-distinguish transitions between "lessons." However, once readers get used to the layout, it will be easier to follow along. The comic book-style artwork is well done and engaging. Big fun! (Big learning, too)

I saw co-creator of this book, Saul Griffith once talk about the importance of making science and the future "awesome" for kids.

This book goes a long way towards that goal.

There are three ways to appreciate this book.

First, just as a comic. The art and writing are top-notch. Fun and bright, it's engrossing and a treat to read and enjoy. Nick Dragotta and the other artists put together beautiful, cohesive art.

The second way to look at it as a project book. These aren't glue-felt-on-cardboard kinds of projects. This shows you how to build homemade bottle rockets (and subs), a kite, origami-bots and even ice cream.

The last way (though probably not truly the last, there are so many ways to appreciate this book) is educational. You learn a ton of great stuff about science and art through HowToons. More importantly, that learning is fun, not boring.

I liked the howtoons feature in Make magazine, so when I saw this book I purchased it for my 12 years old daughter. She loves it!

I was all set to read a “taboo” romance with step siblings in an understandably complicated situation with the odds stacked against them.

What I got was a whiny, spineless, immature brat with a penchant for jerking the hero around and waaaaay too much drama. In fact, I may have spotted a llama roaming around somewhere (As in the drama llama).

So basically the story is that after seven years in the army ends with a shoulder wound Jackson Worthington is back home and still lusting after squeaky clean Lily Hastings, who just happens to be his stepsister. Kissing her was what got him kicked out of the house when he was 18 and basically he still wants the hell out of her. Lily is engaged to marry a man she doesn’t love because she’s all about pleasing the parental instead of finding her own happiness but despite that she and Jackson begin a red hot but secret affair. Of course, nothing can stay a secret for long right?

I just could not overlook how immature and weak Lily was! She needed someone to slap some sense into her pea brain because that girl just created a gigantic problem out of a situation that could have been solved with determination, stubbornness and some old fashion woman’s intuition. To me she seemed like a lifeless puppet who needed a puppet master in order to seem real. She seemed to enjoy playing with the Jackson’s feelings and that didn’t sit well with me. She knew she was hurting him and making him look bad but as long as she didn’t look bad it didn’t matter. I need my heroines to have a backbone in order to connect with them and Lily just didn’t have one.

Jackson was slightly more likable though I seriously questioned his taste in women. He had more development in his personality and I felt like he was more of a multi-dimensional character than Lily. His PTSD symptoms were realistic and really showcased where he was mentally when he was forced home.

Final Verdict: Bad Romance was sadly just what the title suggests, a bad romance which was a shame because I’ve enjoyed Jen McLaughlin’s books in the past.

A decent step-brother story, and it worked for me.

As I stated in a previous review, the whole "step-brother", aka taboo-type relationship, story line was something that I never really understood the thrill of. Out of nowhere, it seemed that this line was increasingly popular and I just wasn't sure it was a bandwagon I was hopping on.

But now and again, I stumble across one that I'm totally on board with.

Take BAD ROMANCE, for example. When Jackson leaves home, it's against the word of his mother and his (no good, rotten, money whoring) step-father. They are getting him into Yale even if they have to pay him into the good graces of whomever matters. But that's not what Jackson wants -- he's joining the military. The only bright spot in this terrible home is Walt's daughter, three years his junior, Lilly. She's quick to smile, quick to give him an out, quick to help him get his mind off of things. For him to get what he wants though, he needs to leave her behind.

I felt that the 'ganging up' of his mother and Walter on Jackson was a bit overdramatic... But of all the scenes and all the dialogue, that was really the one chunk of words that seemed too far-fetched to me. Aside from that though, the writing was easy to get lost in and the story moved along well. Jackson had been forced to grow up early and hardened quickly, making his chosen profession an easy one to picture him in. Lilly was at times naive, but I felt she was a great counter-point to Jackson.

So for me, this was a decent step-brother story and it worked well in my opinion.

Ahhhh. Jackson Worthington, how I love you. Recently there have been a lot of stepbrother romance novels being written, some of them really good and some not so much. My opinion on this one - one of the best ive read! Jen McLaughlin/Diane Alberts has never let me down so when I saw that she was dipping into the stepbrother trope, I had a feeling it was going to be at the top of my list!
Lily Hastings (spoiled Daddy's girl) is contracted to marry some douche in order to save her dad's company. In her mind, by marrying this man she has known her whole life but doesnt love, she is saving the jobs of hundreds of people. Taking one for the team, so to speak. Jackson Worthington is Lily's stepbrother. His worthless mother is married to Lily's overbearing father. As teenagers, Jackson and Lily share one steamy moment before getting caught and Jackson runs away to the military. After an injury forces him home, he and Lily reunite, quite by accident, and this is where the story really takes off. Lots of family drama, internal struggles and sexy times - this book has a really well rounded feel to it. I totally wanted to just pinch Lily's head off at times for her insane loyalty to her father's company. But Jackson... oh my. Sexy, sexy, sexy. The characters were very well developed and the editing was great, even for an ARC. And did I mention the cover.. {fans self}
I will definitely recommend this book and give it 5***** wickedgoodstars! -asw

Try it; you'll like it.

This African studies classic was first published in 1969. It is the first academic book on Africa that I ever read (about 1970), and I am assigning it to my students next fall. Davidson is a great friend of Africa, and a highly respected historian. His anthropology is sometimes off the mark, but he communicates each of his little lessons in an engaging style. Read one Davidson book on Africa and you'll want to read his others.

Not a bad hinkle book

Davidson's book is not the heavy politically correct tome that might be expected but adds some need needed corrective to certain myths surrounding Africa. He hardly expects readers to "fall over themselves" ascribing genius to Africa. Instead he realistically notes Africa's environment, and its limitations, and produces a fairly balanced picture.

The simplistic notion that Pre-Islamic African cultures fall far short of European cultures is decisively dismissed in this book. Indeed, such cultures included Egypt and Nubia, which on some counts at the height of their power, were more productive and prosperous than European cultures of the same era. The same could be said of Chinese culture over several centuries, as noted by conservative scholar Thomas Sowell in his "Race and Culture." Davidson avoids the simplistic trap of "racial" rankings that so obsess many Western minds today, and the central fallacy of taking one part of Europe with some advanced technology at a particular era, and using that as the "perfect" standard to represent all Europe, or to compare everyone else with. Such a fallacy fails to see that in fact Europeans were at widely varying levels in technology, literacy etc, over their history and hardly a monolithic bloc. Davidson tackles several simplistic claims:

(1) Pre-Islamic Africa as "anti-scientific" ------ This same claim could be said of a lot of European cultures, even centuries after Gallieo- from tribal entities of Eastern Europe, to the peasants of the West, to the hostile Catholic authorities in supposedly more sophisticated parts. Pre-islamic Africa was very familiar with practical observation and knowledge needed for daily life, just like comparable cultures in Europe at the same time. Davidson shows such daily "practical" science as taking priority over the more abstract. A concern for "practical" matters is hardly unique to Africa. It marked Italian immigrants to the US in the 19th and 20th century according to conservative scholar T. Sowell.

(2) Knowledge was not accumulated from generation to generation (p. 59), mainly because pre-Islamic Africans were illiterate (pp 28-9, 222, 257). Simplistic notions of knowledge accumulation fail to understand that knowledge used locally was effectively transmitted via oral tradition, and that various European cultures also varied in their acquisition of literacy, right down to the 20th century. Factually, the peoples of Meroe and Cush were literate long before the pre-islamic era, and that is not even counting Egypt, which according to equally one-dimensional notions, is located somewhere outside Africa.

(3) The ideal tribal organization was "static" (p. 55). Davidson shows that actually Africans tribal structures were quite dynamic, as even a cursory knowledge of say West Africa will reveal. Ironically, a number of European writers complain about static European cultures as well, such as Marx's criticism of backward Slavic peoples, and the frequent criticism of certain Northern Italian writers that Southern Italians were a backward, "different race".

(4) Beliefs and actions of Africans were "irrational" and "ghost-ridden" (p. 80). Davidson dismisses this naïve claim by showing the sophistication and internal consistency of many African belief systems. Ironically, the beliefs of many European cultures and religions have been criticized as "irrational" or "pagan" not only by "established" religious regimes, but by today's atheists as well who dismiss much of Europe's religious heritage.

(5) New African dynasties rewrote or suppressed their histories (p. 115). In this case, Africans were just like Europeans Davidson shows. The genius Davidson refers to is political genius in nation building. The Asante "golden stool" is an example of such, just as the genius of certain European kings manipulated histories to enhance their power.

Davidson dismisses naïve notions that Africans had "no basis" in science, no scientific method, no permanent knowledge or institutional learning, and no path to betterment. Other historians note that similar statements have been applied to various European peoples like the Slavs, the Balkan peoples, or the Irish, and are likewise equally naïve and lacking a sound grasp of history.

Naïve claims allocating all advanced technology and knowledge to Europe also fail to take into account the massive borrowing from other cultures that has occurred by Europe, whether it be gunpowder, printing, paper or the compass from the Chinese, or algebra from India, or the movement of vastly important crops and animals like wheat or horses from Asiatic areas to Europe. Contrary to the notions of one-dimensional critics of Africa, all these things did not originate out of thin air, simplistically satisfying as such explanations are to Eurocentric writers.

Much has been made historically and by some contemporary critics of such practices as female circumcision, infanticide, etc that occurred in SOME African cultures. Such things also occurred in various tribal cultures of Europe as well. Cannibalism for example and human sacrifice appears both in Germanic and Slavic culture at various times, among various peoples. Sodomy makes a regular appearance, from the high sounding Greek philosophers in their "Symposiums" to the couplings of the Thracian Sacred band, to the fighting men of Sparta. On measure after negative measure, (kleptocracy, low standard of living, human rights abuses, tribalism, etc) it is equally easy to point out the same things in European cultures as well. The Irish for example have long been stigmatized for high levels of violence and substance abuse, and the Germans blessed Europe with mass genocidal slaughter.

Davidson emphasizes the diversity of African culture, that it is not a single one-dimensional monolith, but quite varied. In other words, African peoples differ just like European peoples at various eras and places, hard as this is to grasp by simplistic critics of the continent. Davidson's book helps set the record straight.

A Remarkable Accomplishment

Due Diligence for Global Deal Making is one of the most enlightening and comprehensive books of its kind. Editor and contributor Arthur Rosenbloom has identified a group of thoughtful, experienced due diligence practitioners who describe the process from seven different points of view. The process is covered both from an in-bound and an out-bound standpoint. Despite the diversity of perspectives, the book maintains a consistent style and voice and refrains from undue repetition.
Each of the seven substantive chapters looks at a business using a slightly different lens: strategic, operational, financial and accounting, legal, tax, organizational and, oddly but perhaps most interestingly, the Internet. Scattered through the chapter are cautionary tales of what can go wrong in the real world if the practitioner or the client cuts corners. At the end of each chapter is a series of charts and lists which sets forth the subjects of investigation, often with indications of where to find the information or how it is important to the evaluation of the target.
For anyone who has to conduct, supervise or coordinate due diligence, this overview is remarkably helpful. For the young attorney, accountant or business strategist, Due Diligence provides a veritable Bible for his or her own due diligence. But more importantly, the book informs the reader how the information gleaned fits into the overall process.
Rosenbloom's brief but enlightening look at the due diligence world post 9/11 is among the most compelling parts of the book. This section alone can be worth the price of the book. The possible effects of terrorism or war on a business, in concrete terms, or on the material adverse change or force majeure clauses of a contract are sobering and helpful.
Describing due diligence from seven points of view and then domestic and foreign aspects on top of that is a tall order. This informative book is a remarkable, and even entertaining accomplishment...

Doing mergers and acquisitons that create value for shareholders is harder than ever. It is even more difficult to do this in a multi-national environment. The compelxities of tax, accounting, securities laws and the regulatory differences add enormous complexities to the already huge challenges of just getting the stragegy right and executing it!!
This handbook, Due Dilignece for Global Deal Making, dramatically increases the odds of doing a deal better. Many experts believe that deals are made or broken in the due diligence phase. That is is where you figure out how much to pay, and the valuation is totally dependent on what you find out and what questions you ask.
This book covers it all from strategic imperative to tax rules. It also has an excellent chapter on my own area of expertise, people and organizational fit. I found the section on beginning to evaluate the fit of the corporate cultures particularly helpful. We think the success of true mergers are highly influenced by the cultural fit.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone practicing in this area, regardless of their area of expertise, as it gives them context for all of the other important, areas.

As with marriage, the success rate for global deal-making should give the wise investor pause. Most such mergers and acquisitions do not increase shareholder value. Even with the fallout from the burst bubble still landing all over the place, the juggernaut of globalization is such that international deals still manage to engender a lot of passion; it seems the grass is always greener on the other side of the border. Business leaders know that sometimes the riskiest move is the one they decide not to make, since a good strategic acquisition can ensure your company's survival. For these reasons, interest in cross-border transactions will probably remain strong, as industries consolidate and as global economic barriers collapse. However, deals that involve foreign accounting and legal practices can be absolutely perilous without expert professional guidance. Teacher Friendly Book for Putting Brain Research Into Practice

Importantly, author and Johns Hopkins graduate, Mariale Hardiman, comes from two points of view having served as both a K-12 educator and college faculty. Hardiman's primary goal to inform educational practice shows in her practical model that synthesizes research on the brain and learning into an approach that can be used in the classroom.

In the chapter on important themes in brain research, Hardiman states that just as the potential for learning continues throughout the lifespan, `research also tells us that effective instruction not only increases memory and learning but also produces neurobiological changes in the brain.' Teachers who read this book can use the Brain-Targeted Teaching Model to improve instruction. The model is also appropriate for use by school leaders, professional developers, and instructional mentors who want to improve teaching practice through their work with groups of educators.

In the author's words `The model does not propose new methods of teaching. Rather, it synthesizes a number of elements related to research-based effective teaching and connects each one to what neuroscience reveals about how the brain learns.' The Brain-Targeted Teaching Model describes and discusses six stages within the learning and teaching process: emotional climate, physical learning environment, design of the learning experience, how to teach declarative and procedural knowledge, teaching for extension and application of knowledge, and evaluating learning.

Dr. Hardiman provides a model which can be used by every classroom teacher in organizing the wealth of information being published to improve instructional techniques. While aimed at brain research, the model can include differentiated instruction as well as other techniques.

The book provides six categories in which to place all relevant notes and information. These six categories serve as the conduit between research and application. The last chapters provide a large number of learning units which have been "field tested" as well as information on school improvement planning.
