Easy to learn to do you own nails

This book was easy to read and learn what you need to do to be able to do your own nails. Now I can save money doing them myself at home, and not spend a lot of wait time or money on full sets or getting a fill. It's also good to learn to do this at home and save the risk of germs or even worse Hep C that you can get in a nail salon for re-using it's equipment, polish, files, etc.

I did not find what I was looking for in this book. The biggest problem I have when doing my own nails is shaping around my cuticle sides, but I did not see much information to help solve that problem.

Excellent for someone fairly new to management

After years of being very content to be "behind the scenes", I was promoted to the Director of a division. I now have more than 30 people that I manage. Getting 30 people to produce great work product is hard enough, but "life" always sneaks in and can bring everything to a grinding halt. This book has been very helpful in showing me how to approach subjects that I really don't want to approach with people. Despite explaining what "casual dress" means dozens of times over the last few years, when I said everyone could have "casual dress" for the summer, someone suddenly thought that meant threadbare t-shirts and flip-flops. And that may be totally acceptable in some areas, but we're in an office building where security would definitely look at you twice if you were wearing something like that! We have office romances that have developed. We have people who used to be really great at their job and now are slipping. And on top of all of that, I still have 80 hours of work to do each week that doesn't include dealing with dress, sex, and slacking. While some may read this book and think "well, it's pretty much common sense, telling you to not put people on the defensive, phrase your words properly, etc.", it's great that I don't have to sit and think about it. I can find a similar issue in the book, rearrange it a bit to fit my situation, have my discussion, and then get back to work. I am very glad I have this book!

How to be a schmuck

I am a graduate student in an MBA program and I bought this book thinking it would help me with an upcoming human resource management course. About half way through the first chapter, I began to feel a knot in my stomach as I read the authors solutions to workplace problems. I feel this book is more about maintaining the corporate power structure than it is about becoming a more effective manager. I'll give a few examples.

The author describes what a manager should say to a newly promoted first-time supervisor. According to the author, the manager should critique the employee's attire and explain that she is now expected to dress like a professional. (Wouldn't it have been enough to explain the dress code for management personnel and skip the personal attack?) Next, the manager should criticizes the employee's choice of workplace friends and suggests she abandon her former friendships and make new "higher-level friends", although the manager claims he is not dictating who the employee's friends should be; he's just offering his kindly advice. Finally, the manager tells the employee that he needs her to be a leader, but makes sure she understands that she is not permitted to make any decisions without his prior approval. In effect, the author recommends breaking in a new first-time supervisor by using humiliation and micromanagement to preserve the corporate power structure.

When the author addresses employee absenteeism, his solution is to lecture the employee about how allotted sick days are not to be used as extra vacation days and that the employee shouldn't use a sick day on a Monday or Friday because it gives the appearance they are taking advantage of company policy just to get long weekends. So this is what good managers do? They harass employees about using the sick time the company gives them?

When insubordination is addressed, the author gives an example of a meeting with an outburst by a team member accusing the manager of being incompetent. He suggests the manager immediately stop the meeting and then, to get the employee's reason for the outburst, set up a closed three-way meeting between the manager, an HR rep. and the employee. (This is purportedly done in the interest of fairness with the HR rep. being a mediator, but is more likely seen by the employee as an inquisition.) The employee should then be sent home and informed by a phone call from HR that they have been fired for gross insubordination. What a wasted opportunity for feedback from the team. If this is an illogical person who is prone to conflict for no apparent reason, then this would come out in a team discussion of the issues. But more than likely, there are suppressed issues in this team and it's best to bring them to the surface in front of everyone. After all, perhaps you are an incompetent manager.

This book gives advice for maintaining the corporate status quo that has already caused so much damage to our society. To further improve your management skills and your company, I'd recommend reading The Great Game of Business or Open Book Management.

This is a must have book for any beginner or seasoned manager, director, executive. Sometimes you do not always know how to put the right words together that are legally sound and that deliver the appropriate message without making your employee feel uncomfortable. This book has TONS of examples to get you through even the most awkward of situations. GREAT RESOURCE!!!

!001 Beers is well written by reviewers who have obviously tried these beers. This book is informative and as heavy as a 12 pack. I suggest opening all the way every 100 pages or so to exercise the spine. There are many great beers missing from this collection but that is mainly because there are so many localized micro-breweries with excellent beer that it is hard to keep up. A case in point, Pliny the Elder is in here but not Pliny the Younger.

Tons of photos and every page is of the same high quality paper, hence the weight. There are no ratings from 1 to 5 stars or anything like that, these are all quality beers and no ego comparisons are necessary.

If you like to buy/drink interesting beers this is the absolute definitive book to enhance your hobby. It also suggests the temperature each beer should be served at which will enhance it's taste and this is important especially to the American pallet which seems to like the beer much too cold for proper enjoyment. Read this and learn how to use the refrigerator much less and enjoy your beer much more.

Finally, life has some purpose! :)

I picked up this volume a few months ago and have been salivating over it ever since. It's chock full from cover to cover with sexy, glossy pics of some of the most beautiful brews you will ever lay eyes (and taste buds) on. Most are full page spreads showing the bottle with a properly poured glass, and several descriptive and/or background paragraphs, plus helpful tasting notes. Other beers are featured two to a page with only a look at the label (no other photo) and a shorter description, but still very adequate. Reviews also contain "vitals" on the beer, such as brewery name, location, year first brewed, ABV, etc. The book is divided into five major sections based loosely on the type of beer: amber, blond, white, dark and "specialty". Lastly, there's a handy index in the back organized by brewery for easy reference.

My only beef with this otherwise inspired volume is with some of the beers that were selected or omitted. For example, workaday schlock like Budweiser or Pabst are included for their "iconic" value, but infinitely better brews like Bell's Expedition Stout or some of the Founders product line, for instance, are left out. One wonders about the editor's sense of proportion in some of those selections. Still, this is an awesome book from cover to cover for anyone who enjoys fine beer. If you're groping for a sense of purpose in life, this book will help you find it.

a beer lover's delight

My husband and I love to sample microbrews; each month, we attend a beer tasting night at a local restaurant where a microbrewery is featured. I thought this would be a great gift for my husband and I wasn't mistaken. He's spent hours perusing the pages ... and he's not an easy guy to please!

The book is rich with terrific pictures of the beers. Each has its own page which offers a history of the brewery and the particular beer, including tasting notes. Weighing in at more than 950 pages, you know that you're going to get a thorough review of the world's greatest beers. While some are available locally, the rest can be enjoyed through the book ... sort of like coffee table book of the most beautiful places on earth that you can visit in your armchair. (This book isn't large like a coffee table book; instead it's of a smaller side and quite squat!

Very interesting and informational

I purchased this book for my Communicable Disease Control course while in college. I was fortunate enough to find a buyer who was selling it at a lower price than other people. The book is a great buy, full of information and pictures. There is background on a lot of different diseases, where they originated from, what the symptoms are, how to treat them (if you can), and of course pictures of what the disease does. My boyfriend has never been interested in reading textbooks, but because he saw the pictures, he can't put it down and now he wants to show everyone (yes even his boss). This is definitely worth it if you want to learn about Chaagas, Westnile, plagues, yellow fever, clostridium, viruses, bacteria, helminths, prions, sexually transmitted diseases, vertically and horizontally transmitted diseases and like I said, even the pictures can teach you a thing or two.

This is a great book for a special topics beginner college class, a high school biology class, a non-majors biology or microbiology course in college or for a layperson. The book is concise, affordable and well written. Krasner's writing style uses humor which reinforces clarity of basic concepts and themes of microbiology/the microbial challenge. It's not just a book for a course...it's a book for anyone who wants to learn about germs in our world. At a time when H1N1 is in the news ....natural disasters resulting in disease outbreaks...this book explains the basics of germs and their challenges....in the past, today and into the future.
