A great source for the new music

As to talk about the new music and go further deeply into it, one has to clearly define the roots, social situation, paradigms, early tendencies of pioneers, theoretical backround of art in general with its relation to the overall world view and so on... Brindle's success on figuring out these concepts deserves an appreciation. The book achieves to provide a wide understanding of twentieth century music with almost all aspects of the reasoning of artistic creativity of our age. One of the most important qualities of this book also underlies in it's perfectly selected musical examples provided quite often within the text that are also including new technics used in the "new" music. From this point of view alone, it would be evaluated as the second book after Erhard Karkoschka's "Notation in New Music". Though it is mostly in charge of musicologists who are in search of a comprehensive twentieth century music source rather than composers especially focusing on compositional tools but anyway it is a must have book for both.

Fine synopsis of post-war trends in the avant garde

Worthwhile addition to the library of books devoted to contemporary music. The presentation is quite lucid and the topics covered are quite relevant for today's composer, or those interested in modern techniques. There is very little coverage of the most recent composers, namely those working in neo-tonal contexts, but there is a mention of this trend in an epilogue. I find the graphical information in the book some of the best content in the book. Some chapters try to cover somewhat technical topics too quickly, but if you read it carefully enough, it's comprehensible.

Nothing new here, same old thin arguments

Firstly, believing in a pre-trib rapture is not heresy. In the same way the author not believing in any rapture is heresy. It's a personal opinion based on a persons view of the Bible and what the Scriptures say. For me, I have heard and read all the arguments against it but I just can't see the Scriptures pointing to anything other than pre-trig. Secondly, the tribulation period is God's wrath on the unbelieving world and Him dealing with Israel. In the Bible, we, the church, are not appointed to wrath as stated in 1 Thessalonians 5:9.

Abraham even asked the question in Genesis “Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked? Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" Genesis 18:23-24. The angels could do nothing until righteous Lot and his family were delivered safely from Sodom and Gomorrah. Paul taught on the rapture. John taught on it. Jesus taught on it.

During the Second Coming, you can count down to the very day Jesus returns. You get the timeline from the book of Daniel. 1290 days from the time when the abomination of desolation occurs. Basically if you count down the 1290 days you get 3 1/2 years. The abomination of desolation is when the antichrist sits in the Holy of Holies and declares himself as God. So, counting at this mid point in the tribulation period you get 3 1/2 years and then you get the return of Jesus. My point? He comes as a thief, He says. How can Jesus come as a thief if you know exactly when He comes at the end of the 3 1/2 years? No, He is referring to the rapture of the church. How can one "be ready" during a time of destruction, death, wrath, suffering? No, it's talking about now. His return is imminent.

One section of verse will really get you thinking and should cause you to study for yourself. When does the tribulation period start? When Jesus opens the first of the seven seals. Go to chapter 5 of Revelation. Read the song "And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed US to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, And have made US kings and priests to our God And WE shall reign on the earth.” Revelation 5:9-10 Who is the "we?" Who is the "us?" In the modern versions of the Bible, the writers totally change the personal pronouns to "them" and "they" but these words are not supposed to be them or they. It's supposed to be US, WE.

"And have redeemed US to God.." Angels cannot be redeemed, only man can be redeemed, so these are not angels singing. And here we get to more evidence. Since this cannot be the Jews only, the "out of every tribe, tongue, people and nation" can only mean the entire world. Every tribe, every tongue, every people, every nation. "And have made US kings and priests" can only be the church because we are told that we have been created to be a "kingdom of priests to serve God" Revelation 1:6.

And then when chapter 5 is coming to an end, what happens? Jesus takes up the scroll and is about to open the FIRST seal, thus starting the tribulation period. So when does this song occur? BEFORE Jesus opens the seals, and before the tribulation period even begins. Remember Revelation 3:10 "Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you FROM (notice the word is not IN or THROUGH. The Greek word for "from" is completely from, or OUT of) the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth."

Regardless of your view, there are definitely verses for the rapture. Each view has their argument, but to say one is heresy is really stretching and completely wrong. If that were true, then Paul taught heresy when he said "For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better." Philippians 1:23. He too wanted nothing more than to go be with Jesus. The rapture is a hope to depart this evil and wretched world to go be with Christ. It's only heresy when one says a view is heresy over their own. In other words, "They teach falsely, I teach truth, listen to me." That's basically what you're saying when you call a view a heresy.

I accept you as a brother in Christ even with the view you hold to. I believe differently but that doesn't make you or me correct. Our salvation depends on Christ's finished work on the cross, not His finished work on the cross AND what we believe about the rapture or no rapture. You have a view. You are convinced in your own mind. That is your conviction. Don't try to force anyone to swallow your view with threatening words such as heresy.

And for those who are saying "Why do we get to go and not live our life fully like those who died in the past? What makes us so special?" Who are you? If God says "That's it, Son! Go get Your church!" who are you to argue with His plan, with His timeline? If He were to take you in a car accident or a disease or health condition, are you going to argue with Him when you stand before Him? It's not about you. It's about His timing.

If the rapture were to have happen the day before I was saved, then that's no one's fault but my own. If you didn't live your life fully, so what? Wouldn't you rather go and depart and be with Christ which is far better? Aren't you mouthing those same words of Paul? Or are you saying "Not yet, Lord. I'm not done with the things of my life. Come some other time. How come You didn't come for those in the past? What makes me so special?" We need to get away from us and start looking to Him. It's all about Him. It's whenever He decides this world is done and it's time to start the tribulation period.

I'm ready now. This world has nothing left. I'm ready to hear that trumpet sound and the voice of the archangel saying "Come up here!" If you're not ready for that, then that's what you hold to. But I will not call your view a heresy because it is not salvation determining. Our trust in Jesus Christ determines our salvation. Fighting over a rapture or no rapture view is "majoring in the minors."

To be honest, I was looking for the next thing to read and nothing was calling to me on my Kindle...

I am a book lover and I tend to read things even if I don't think I will agree or whatever. I have taught my children that if we want to be able to defend what we believe, we must know how to do so intelligently, boldly, and with a spirit of excellence. So, I must admit, I didn't get this book because I thought I found someone to agree with a belief I hold, nor was I seeking some great revelation, etc. **Confession** When I first read the title, I was like really...how many people are going to deny Jesus and wake up in hell before they realize "It's too late!" To be honest, I was looking for the next thing to read and nothing was calling to me on my Kindle.

That being said, I give this book five stars. I won't tell you what my belief is on the topic and I won't tell you if the author swayed me or convinced me or anything else. Honestly, that's not what this review is about. I won't debate nor criticize someone for how they believe such a way, especially on public forum. (If you truly are interested, feel free to message me and we can discuss it as adults.)

Back to my review...I will tell you that Mr. Morrison is very respectful in his approach to this topic, he is also very well studied. He doesn't just throw out his ideas and run. He doesn't just spew his words with no foundation. Mr. Morrison DOES give foundation, sources, and very good points of reference to back up his beliefs and Biblical understanding. This book is well thought out and written. I would recommend that all believers read this. Like I said, I'm not saying I do or don't agree with what he says. I'm just saying that it gives us something to think about and research on our own and a point that we could all use as a jumping off point for diving deeper into what we believe and why.

I feel we should all be so grounded and knowledgeable of what we believe. So, if you don't read it for any other reason, read it to gain a template of how to intelligently and respectfully defend what you believe and why you believe it. After all, what do you have to lose? If you truly believe what you say you do...can one person really shake that foundation, especially if it's built on the the "ROCK" that it should be? And if they do, did your really believe it or where you just following the masses?

A Time Capsule Left By a Master

There was a long, storied era when the revolver was king and the fast draw stopped at belt-level, when unsighted "point-shooting" was standard law enforcement training, and when sophistication in handgun bullets meant lead semi-wadcutters instead of lead round-noses. Bill Jordan was the apogee of that glacial age, and this book is its core sample.

All of us present-day shooters should read this book and know from whence the current art and science grew. Jordan was an accomplished writer as well as the preeminent shootin' badge of his time, so the reading is a straightforward pleasure. Further, this is a book by a working law officer of immense experience, and some of its greatest charm is in its practical day-to-day advice. For example, whether or not you'll ever draw your weapon in extremis, you'll have to ride in a car with the thing at your side for eight hours a day, and that will have a lot to do with your choice of barrel length, holster style, and belt. Similarly: How to make wax bullets for cheap practice; and how to shrink-fit a new leather holster to your gun -- a lost art in our age of Kydex and other plastics. And at every point there are excellent photographs: How to do it right...and, with comic gravity, how *not* to do it. Jordan was six-feet-six of Law and Order - with a sense of humor.

(About the only thing he doesn't talk about, oddly enough, is how to reload quickly. Or maybe that is not so odd, coming from a time before speedloaders, and from a man who never needed but one shot of the six in his gun.)

But for us this is history, not a lesson plan, and the equipment recommendations are not realistic or best-practice in our time. Some reviewers here have commended this book as a modern manual-of-arms, but this is not good advice. We use the sights without fail except at fist-fight range; the trigger finger never enters the guard until the piece is aligned; we depend on high-tech projectiles combining barrier penetration with certain terminal expansion; and if we showed up sporting a cut-away trigger guard or a holster that exposed the trigger, we'd be escorted off the range at high speed.

And four years after this book was published, then-modern autoloading pistols were first adopted by a major US law enforcement organization (S&W Model 39, Illinois State Police), and the eclipse of the revolver began. In our time of Glocks and Sigs this seems obvious and inevitable, but there was no reason why it should have been obvious to Jordan, who in a few pages disregarded the auto as impractical for law enforcement and whose ultimate preference in a police cartridge, which became the .41 Magnum, landed with a soggy N-Frame-sized thud and was swept away on a tide of high-capacity autopistols. (Note that this review is written by one who prefers, and prefers to carry, revolvers. Bill Jordan was simply right in his time; some of us are just...nostalgic in ours.)

So Jordan was not wrong. He was right in 1963, and he proves himself right with wit, great photos, and three decades of experience. Imbibe. Then go to the range.

As the people’s war accelerated from September 1984, intimidation and political killings rapidly accelerated. At the same time, a remarkably effective propaganda campaign put the blame for violence on the National Party government and its alleged Inkatha surrogate. Sympathy for the ANC soared, while its rivals suffered crippling losses in credibility and support.

By 1993 the ANC was able to dominate the negotiating process, as well as to control the (undefeated) South African police and army and bend them to its will. By mid-1994 it had trounced its rivals and taken over government.

People’s War shows the extraordinary success of this war in giving the ANC a virtual monopoly on power. It also shows, in part at least, the great cost at which this was achieved. Apart from the killings, the terror, and the destruction that marked the period from 1984 to 1994, the people’s war set in motion forces that cannot easily be reversed. For violence cannot be turned off ‘like a tap’, as the ANC suggested, and neither can anarchy easily be converted into order.

Anthea Jeffery holds law degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand and from Cambridge, and a doctorate in human rights law from the University of London. Her previous books include The Natal Story: Sixteen years of conflict and The Truth about the Truth Commission. Both books have been acclaimed for their meticulous and objective approach, and for breaking new ground on important and contentious issues.

This book challenges the mainstream narrative of the apartheid struggle.

Jeffery provides a thorough and objective analysis of the formation and violence carried out by the African National Congress. Those who are looking for answers beyond what the mainstream media has shown should read this book!

It is not an apology for the apartheid state, but it does question the legitimacy of ANC's struggle against the apartheid. The greed, the violence, the women - all exposed and discussed.

An insightful view beyond that of the politically correct

A colleague who holds a PhD in history and taught at a staff college recommended that I read this book.
What interested me was the visit of the African National Congress (ANC) to Vietnam to learn about the prosecution of a "people's war".
Having previously attended courses with members for the ANC's armed wing, I wondered what they were doing in a region that had little to do with Africa. This book gave the answer!

The suppression of any opposition (in this case the IFP) was one of the ANC's goals.

Having lived through the period in question I have seen the evidence that Jefferey presents. The elimination of opposing views through intimidation and murder was the daily occurrence then. The media was reluctant to criticise the ANC. The book explains why.

It is not a pleasant or happy book to read. It also shows the type of mentality that South Africa now has in government with corruption, violence, crime, nepotism and ineptitude.

An important and insightful book for those who wish to make sense of the situation in South Africa under the ANC.

A helpful & interesting guide to some of my favorite places!

This book inspired me to plan a series of long weekend trips to the lower NC coast, and revisit some of the places I vacationed at as a child/teenager. There are many historic and curious areas and sites pointed out in every chapter, places that we drove by years ago, but never really took notice of. For instance, a civil war ship wrecked close to the beach and now located under a fishing pier is only one of the many curousities Barefoot discusses. I was also inspired to visit places I had never been, such as the town of Southport, at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, and Bald Head Island, just a 20 minute ferry ride away. The descriptions of even the smallest details given by Barefoot lured me to find these wonderful places.I can now appreciate the lower NC coast both from the historical perspective, and from the aspect of its unspoiled, natural beauty.

What a start

Moran has to be congratulated on this work of ludicrous insanity. I was convinced that the author must somehow be the melding of Robert Rankin and Ricky Gervais. This work runs so fast from one piece of hilarity to the next that the global plot becomes secondary and yet it hangs together. Moran has created lovable characters and blended satire and fantasy so well that I would imagine that anyone who is into this genre at all will be very happy to have read this work.

Bonkers - But Best Enjoyed in Small Servings

Mr. Cumberfield is clueless, socially inept, and just skewed enough that his observations are often charming, funny, or thought provoking, (or all three at once). The author has mastered the art of pointed silliness, and that is no small feat. But, just as one is advised against eating an entire box of chocolates in one sitting, it seems that this book lends itself to browsing. That way you can skip the nougat centers and really enjoy the dark chocolate ones with raspberry cream filling.

There is a plot, but there are numbered pages as well, and, while I found the plot clever, either would serve the purpose of moving you from the beginning of the book to the end. I mostly enjoyed the good-humored mood of the book, the occasionally arresting bit of idiot savant insight, and especially some of the set pieces. For example, the recounting of Mr. Cumberfield's visit to a Retirement Home to put on one of his original toy theater productions is just plain brilliant. It is brutal, hilarious, and a bit wistful, all at the same time. Bits like this go beyond just silliness or the Amelia Bedelia formula, (which is, after all, just the same joke over and over again). And, behind the blithe and amiable gormlessness of some of Mr. Cumberfield's observations there is just a hint of edge and vinegar, which reminds you that this is not simply a book of shallow tomfoolery. One begins to appreciate the craft and care that goes in to creating something that appears so light and airy and frivolous.

But, not to over analyze or over praise. This is an usual and rather unique book with tremendous charm and appeal and a very sly and subversive sense of humor. It's sweet and tasty and well worth sampling.

Clever, funny, and original

I first learned about this book through a story on the Guardian's website, honoring "Dinosaurs and Prime Numbers" as its first self-published book of the month (June 2014). Sounded interesting, so I found it on Amazon and started reading. I was hooked straight off.

Walton Cumberfield is an amateur detective and something of an idiot, albeit clever when it counts. He and his lodger Roger take an epic trip through time to solve the mystery of why an old man broke into their house after Walton beats him to death with a Guinness Book of World Records (2008 edition). There's romance, danger, intrigue, poetry, and a space-time independent cow. And a lot of laughs.

Throw "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," "A Confederacy of Dunces," and "Dumb and Dumber" into a blender and you get a feel for "Dinosaurs and Prime Numbers." Walton is a witty and interactive narrator, who speaks directly to the reader at times to explain things, often for comic effect. It's definitely silly at times, and if that doesn't appeal to you, maybe this isn't your book. I loved it, however. As I read I kept thinking of who I knew that might enjoy this so I could recommend it to them. I will definitely be reading the next book in the series when it comes out.

Fritz Scholder, Beautiful Contradiction

Sometime in the 1970's, I saw a televised documentary on Fritz Scholder. In one scene the artist steps into into his studio where he selects a pre-stretched canvas and proceeds to paint in an explosion of creativity. The result was an image of an indian unlike any I had seen before. This was a raw, honest, direct and non-idealized impression of the American indian. It was unavoidably political even as it remained art of the highest order. This left an indelible impression. I have loved Scholder's work ever since.

"Fritz Scholder: Indian Not Indian, "by Lowery Stokes is a superb book. It is beautifully printed. The reproductions are well chosen and appropriate and the essays and commentary by: Kevin Gover, John Haworth, Lowery Stokes Sims, Paul Chaat Smith, Leslie Wasserberger, Richard W. Hill offer a well rounded perspective on the artist and his work.

Fritz Scholder was a man of contradictions with a dark and spiritual side. He was one quarter Luiseno indian, with a predominately German heritage. His father had been a Bureau of Indian Affairs administrator, but Fritz did not grow up on a reservation and for most of his career he did not paint indians or indian themes. Yet he became one of the first instructors at Institute of American Indian Arts, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

I highly recommend to anyone with an interest in Fritz Scholder, painting, American Indians, the southwest and New Mexico.

Great document of an important show

If you missed NMAI's show of the same name, Indian/Not Indian is an essential book to add to your art library. Lots of beautiful illustrations accompany the detailed and knowledgeable essays about Scholder, a uniquely modern and American painter.

As a committed portraitist for much of his career, Scholder's painting does not fit neatly into the story of heroic abstraction that often gets taught as "the" history of 20th c. painting in America. But the energetic brushwork and piercing intellect he brings to the canvas make his works profound, hilarious, and disturbing, often at the same time.

The essays and documentation in the book help us to understand Scholder's strange but unwavering commitment to sharing knowledge through teaching, to recasting the fate of the Native artist, and to creating a unique lexicon of his vision.
