Surprise!

Although it started out as expected, a story about prostate cancer survival, then it turned into a philosophical diatribe that meandered like a driverless motorcycle and ended in a ditch-namely my garbage. I didn't expect to hear why religion is the problem and why we are in trouble as a world according to the author.

It takes one kind of courage to fight cancer for 30 years. It takes another entirely different kind of courage and wisdom to make love as important as survival for 30 years, not be distracted by the shadows of mortality or the indignities of treatment This book is inspiring on both levels.

Funny Book, Great Gift Idea for the Holidays

As a fan of The Middle, I knew Eden Sher was a hilarious actor, but now I know she's a hilarious writer, too. The Emotionary is perfect as a comedic coffee table book or for that person in your life who has all of the feelings and can't quite put them into words. The comics by Julia Werz are a perfect match for Sher's absurdly real feeling descriptions. I've now bought it for my sister and mom and couldn't recommend it more. Five stars.

Could not read this book

The book is actually unreadable, at least for me. Maybe author is very knowledgeable, that's why I put 2 stars, not 1. Maybe lots of words and formulae really provide valuable information. But the book is not intended to teach. It is a pile of poorly explained facts, terms and words, which are incomprehensible. At least for the beginner like me.

Through Kayak, Debbie Spring brings us a compelling story of a teenage girl with inspiring will, strength, and courage. An accident leaves Teresa confined to a wheelchair, feeling hopeless and isolated. On the ground, that is. In the midst of wanting independence and struggling to break free from her parents' overprotective guard, she finds escape when kayaking during her trips to Georgian Bay...the concept of self-discovery and the will to keep moving forward made me appreciate and enjoy this novel. Teresa's character demonstrates the ability to grow, discover more about yourself, and face all insecurities in the worst of times. Overall, it was a sweet and inspiring read and I would recommend it to pre-teen girls. --What If? Magazine 2010

If I could recommend only one book for pre-teen girls, it would be The Kayak....The plot is a romantic coming-of-age story, dealing with many of the issues faced by pre-adolescent girls today. Teresa's conflicted feelings are clearly expressed through Spring's skillful prose. Foreshadowing for the plot twists is expertly handled; under Spring's pen, the love triangle story becomes fresh and fun. Emotions run high, but Teresa's self-respect keeps physical contact limited to kisses...I look forward to recommending this book to all my students. Ultimately, this book leaves a reader entertained and intrigued. Its thought-provoking treatment of handicapped people will stay with readers even after the last page is turned. This novel, which began life as short story, neatly addresses teenage angst, the benefits of team sports, physical disability, and whether or not we are our brothers keeper, all in one handy little volume...However, though [an] entire seemingly formulaic configuration, the character of Teresa shows itself to be infinitely human and believably self-possessed...As a portrait of modern youth, Teresa is spot on the money, not because the author has made her handicapped but because she is just a bit cynical, secretly hopeful, and reluctant to try new things but not completely put off by them. She is also in the process of recovering from the hit and run accident that left her in a wheel chair. Her adventures with handicapped riding and wheelchair basketball are well portrayed and actually informative in their description. Most importantly, this novel is an affirmation of life in the face of unforeseen obstacles and demonstrates how easily everything can change. Nossa, tenho tanto a dizer desse livro: engraçado, interessante, misterioso, incrível...Eu devendo uma recomendação a muuuito tempo, mas chegou a hora H. O que eu posso falar? Da autora, Marcela, minha professora, que tem uma escrita tão boa que prende o leitor e faz ele querer ler cada vez mais; de sua persistência em escrever esse livro, do orgulho que sinto por ela ter seguido seu sonho; dos personagens, em como me apaixonei (ou odiei) cada um deles, descrevê-los-mas não farei isso pois quero que você imagine cada um deles da maneira que eu fiz; dos capítulos, da história, o que eu senti, como eu reagi, poderia citar minhas partes favoritas, mas não consigo, pois adorei o livro todo. Já conversei, perguntei, insisti em saber mais com a autora, mas, mesmo ela dando pequenos spoilers, ela me deixou mais curiosa do que já estava! Meus parabéns Marcela, por ter feito aquilo que queria e não ter desistido, por ter feito eu gostar de história e por escrever esse livro maravilhoso. The authors discuss a broad range of topics and examples, from Schindler's List to Elie Wiesel's throwing out the first pitch at the Mets season opener in 1988, from the idealizations of Anne Frank to a cookbook of recipes from survivors of the Terezin concentration camp, from a look at Art Spiegelman's acclaimed comic book Maus to a contemporary faux pas at the Nike Corporation. While several authors draw directly from the testimony of survivors, the volume as a whole examines how much of our knowledge of the Holocaust comes to us through cultural filters -- from editors and publishers, producers and directors, artists and advertising executives.
