The essential version of this textbook leaves much to be desired, and on many topics leaves loose ends and unclear explanations. If planning to take or teach a molecular biology class, spend the extra money to get the full version of the text, you will be much happier with it.

Well organized, easy to follow

Due to the set up of my class, I was able to teach myself molecular genetics with this book. It was very well written and organized with helpful graphics and tools. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I hate molecular genetics.

One of the best biology books I had used for college, but I did have some trouble looking for material sometimes. The pictures are very colorful and informative, and the description of material is to the point with detail on it later.

I am going through the Transformation Journal a second time and bought this one for my sister, who has expressed a desire to study the bible but has trouble staying focused and retaining all the terminology, etc. By using this journal, with it's small, daily "doses" arranged by subjects, it is an enjoyable way to study the word each day.

A successful expansion of his lecture series at Harvard, Thomas Kelly's First Nights chronicles the events leading to the first performances of five enduring masterpieces. He places Monteverdi's opera L'Orfeo, Handel's venerable Messiah, symphonies by Beethoven and Berlioz, and the Stravinsky ballet The Rite of Spring in the respective contexts of the cities, musical cultures, and performance venues in which they were first heard. Kelly builds his chapters through an accumulation of minute but not trivial detail. The first Euridice in L'Orfeo was a castrato priest; the oppression of Catholics in Handel's Dublin was shocking; the legendary catcalls at The Rite of Spring's premiere began before the curtain went up.

As Kelly gathers these pieces of the puzzle together, we become desperate to find out what will happen, completely forgetting that we already know how the music ultimately triumphed over time. Along the way, there is hilarious information about the audiences (Handel's would not have been out of place at a rodeo, though Monteverdi's was unusually well informed) and reactions from the performers (conductor Pierre Monteux apparently always hated the Rite). There are also many factoids about how the music must have sounded. (Did you know that the first performance of Beethoven's Ninth included a piano?)

Kelly has provocative ideas about performance practice, suggesting that it is really a matter of how adaptable musicians need to be; he feels that musical works themselves, not just our perceptions of them, change over time. A great deal of First Nights is devoted to documents about the works, and the discography is helpfully annotated by Jen-Yen Chen. The focus of each essay is the actual premiere, but Kelly, who teaches a course called "First Nights" at Harvard, first places each event in its broader historical and cultural setting and then proceeds to fill in the scene with numerous interesting details and asides. One of North America's most prominent musicologists, Kelly paints a vivid and fascinating picture of each premiere by combining information taken from a number of sources, including letters, archival documents, and observations of the music itself. New Insights into Old Favorites

This book brings together an extraordinary amount of interesting information about 5 of the greatest works of Western music, in the context of trying to recreate their first performances. Kelly writes with the interest of an enthusiast, but the scholarly background is immense, as befits a university press book. Plenty of interesting illustrations and diagrams, and interesting pull-quotes in boxes, break up the text, enhancing readability. I had not previously been aware that the version heard at the first concert of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique was subjected to significant rewriting before being published in the form performed today -- this is typical of the interesting insights the book adds to common knowledge. Also, that Berlioz changed the selection of wind instruments, but that one can hear many of the originals on some recent recordings. My only disappointment was that Kelly stopped at 5 works - I would love a similar work-up of first performances of the Wagner Ring Cycle, Mozart's Figaro, and a major work of Mahler - perhaps the first performance of the 8th Symphony. I guess that just means that Kelly might profitably prepare a sequel!

A Coffee Table Book You Should Actually Read

It's easy as a listener to get caught up in the impact of great music on us today and to ignore the people who brought it about in the first place. Kelly has done a wonderful job of enlightening and enlivening my experience of these five works, four of which I've spent a lot of time with over the years. He brings together stories on the composition, the cultural setting, and the nuts and bolts of putting on the first performances in a way that both academics and popular readers will appreciate.

For me, one of Sowell's best books

I just love having Thomas Sowell's reasoned opinions at my fingertips, mostly because I think he is an enormous gift to America (and the world). He brings together a huge number of disparate threads, all the way from (1) why we talk so freely about sex, but so guardedly about love, and (2) the meaninglessness of the word "equality" in any politician's mouth, all the way to the general meaninglessness of the word "relevance," especially in education.

I like this book because I agree with it. There are dozens of small, easy-to-digest essays and I find myself nodding my head when I read them. Sometimes there is a subtle bite to his thought, which I also agree with. For example (paraphrasing): "No matter how egalitarian our speech may be, it remains true that women in general make very bad men, and men cannot be women at all."

A fantastic compendium.

Thomas Sowell Reader. Amazing, as usual but....

A great book for a liberal to read...
Living in a town full of mainly liberals, this book and it's brilliant author, are relatively unknown. This man, once a former marxist in his earlier years, had become one of the brightest intellectuals in America. How can he be ignored in such a town, full of "intellectuals?"
Since I am exposed to liberal views, liberal ideas and liberal rhetoric EVERYDAY, I will tell you this book a wiff of fresh air. His views are fairly biased but coming from what a lot of liberals discuss about economics, he is spot on with them. All of his facts can be verified from the back of the book...
Well, his views which a great deal are crammed tightly into this book. If you have read his Basic Economics textbook, this will be nice supplement!
There is a bias to the book. It's Thomas Sowell! Although he can be biased, he makes a note of the opposing argument which is nice.
Keep in mind that Dr. Sowell chooses to let his intellectual cannon shoot down anybody.....left or right. Even in his Housing Boom and Bust he tore after a great deal of Republicans (but mostly democrats). As a moderate conservative, he argues his points nicely and gives you a great perspective of a myriad of issues we still face today in America.

For the love of (insert your favorite Deity here), tell your friends and family about this man and his books!

Unfortunately, many Democratic and Republicans follow Keynesian style economic policies and it's wrecking our economy.

I hope this man and his brilliant work and scholarship will bring a new chapter into American society.

Oh, and he's a Marine!

Everybody needs to read Sowell! He has so much to say that is logical and well researched and well thought out. He doesn't waste a single word and supports all that is said. He'll give you a different spin on a lot of concepts that the media takes for granted, give you the opportunity to step outside of the tide of all the one sided opinions we are assaulted with on a day to day basis. He is respectful of historical figures , offering some essays on people from Marx to George Washington Carver. He doesn't care what color someone's skin is and will criticize other blacks and praise non-blacks , or vice versa if it's fair, but he does so on merit rather than race. He seems very capitalist and encourages a free market, and he should know what he's talking about given his credentials and hard work ethic. His essays and ideas are a breath of fresh air in the smog infested tangled logic air of those with the blow horn nowadays.

Another wonderful Harry Potter film companion

[[VIDEOID:554d4f2ba26e7fdd6de06e1823f481]]I did not get the Collector's Edition of Harry Potter Page to Screen so I'm glad that those bundled books are now sold separately, and I also saved some money in the process.

The book's a 208-page hardcover with a cover that's designed with the same style as the other Harry Potter film companion books, such as Harry Potter: Page to Screen, Harry Potter: The Creature Vault and Harry Potter: Magical Places. There are nice graphic elements and embossed gold text. Very classy.

From what I can see, this seems like the updated book to the character book from the collector's edition. I saw some pages of the book from the collector's edition and the layout looks different but content is the same. Also, there isn't much duplicated content from Harry Potter: Page to Screen.

This book focuses on the characters and their costumes, and each is given good coverage in terms of the space devoted, photographs, artworks and writeup. This book covers the human characters so you won't see any creatures of Dobby. There are also students from other schools, the teaching staff and of course Lord Voldemort and his evil gang of Death Eaters. There are also sections talking about the wands, and how they apply makeup, such as to make Harry disfigured when hit by the Stinging Jinx.

There are lots of information and I enjoyed reading about how they come up with the design and look for the characters.

It's an insightful book that all Harry Potter fans must have. Highly recommended.

Well-made with tons of great photos, concept art, and costume sketches

This is the third book in a series that includes Harry Potter: The Creature Vault and Harry Potter: Magical Places from the Films. It's really well made with a lot of great photos of the cast, concept art, and a ton of neat costume sketches showing how the filmmakers imagined the characters. There's also a lot about the different character props (there's a little bit on each character's wand, for example). The concept art is all awesome—there's an image of Hermione as a polyjuice-potioned cat, the Weasley twins flying around the great hall, and a bunch of creepy Voldemort drawings, for example.

Everyone is included - Harry, Ron, Hermoine, Snape, Dumbledore, Voldemort, etc. The main characters get 4-5 pages each, while minor characters usually get a single 2-page spread.

The book profiles each character, and the text from Jody Revenson (author of many previous Potter books, including Magical Places) is insightful and well written. For some characters, there are a few words about the actor as well as his/her casting and process. But most of the text is dedicated to discussing the look of the characters; that is, how they are translated visually from the page to the screen. This means discussion about costumes, makeup, hairstyling, and props.

You'll find a lot of great images in the book, including some fantastic concept art (usually printed full-page) and unit photography. Again, most of the images are related to costumes and props -- school and Quidditch uniforms; Yule Ball gowns; wand designs; the sorting hat; Death Eater masks; and more. In reading through the book, you really gain an appreciation for the intricate work done to create each character's wardrobe.

If you own the Harry Potter Page to Screen Collector's Edition, then you'll notice some similarity between this book and the 'Wizard Wear & Muggle Attire' book from that set. But even if you own that set, there's new content in the Character Vault that would make it a worthy purchase.

Included within the book are two pull-out posters: one featuring the Order of the Phoenix, and the other featuring the Death Eaters.

This is an excellent resource for fans of the Harry Potter film franchise. It will especially be of interest to those who enjoy the art of costume design.

James Henry Trotter, a poor orphan, is being raised by two horrible aunts. Magic crystals change his humdrum existence, and soon he is off on a great adventure on a giant peach with new friends who are, to say the least, unique. There are sharks, seagulls, and irate cloud people to add interest along the way and, of course, Dahl's irreverent poetry. The story has always been a crowd-pleaser, and Jeremy Irons does more than read the story-he performs it. Each character has a unique voice, aptly suiting each personality, and Irons tells the story with humor and energy. Fans of Dahl will not be disappointed in this briskly paced tale that is a delight from beginning to end.

My favorite book from childhood.

I first read "James and the Giant Peach" when I was 9 years old (I am 14 now), and reread it so many times that I actually know the story by heart! This book is funny, exciting and makes me use my imagination.

The story: After his parents are eaten by a rhinoceros (I would've made a tiger eat them instead, since in real life rhinos don't eat meat!), young James Henry Trotter has to go live with his two mean aunts named Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, who treat him very very badly. Poor James has to live with his aunts for three whole years until one day a mysterious man gives him a bag of magic things. (He tells him they are crocodile tongues.) James is so excited that he starts running back to the house, but when he is underneath an old peach tree in the garden he accidentally slips and spills all the tiny little things and they dig themselves into the roots of the tree.
Suddenly a peach appears on the very tip of the tree and then starts to grow and grow and doesn't stop until it is as big as a house! The aunts are so excited about this that instead of immediately eating pieces off the peach they start charging people to see the peach. After everyone has left they force James to pick up all the litter that the people left behind. Poor James is left all alone in the dark! For no particular reason, James walks up to the peach and starts touching it. He notices that there is a rather large hole in the peach. He crawls in, and the hole becomes a tunnel. He keeps on crawling until he reaches the center of the peach. He meets seven oversized insects who turn out to have swallowed some of the tiny little things that James had spilled. When the stem snips off (with some help, of course), the peach rolls off and the eight travellers embark on the adventure of a lifetime!

Roald Dahl was my favorite childhood author; I have read most of his children's books, and this is my personal favorite.

I recommend this book to anyone between the ages of 7 and 12.

Graet Stuff For Children!!!!!!!!!

This is a great book for children from 4 to 10. I am way past that age but I still enjoyed it. Dahl's style of writing is excellent and the story is quite simple and interesting. All in all, an excellent book and I would recommend anyone with children to buy it.

A Book Full of Imagination

I am a tutor for a young child. I recently read this book to a child who doesn't like to read, and he could not put this book down. From a child's perspective, he found the book easy to read. He said the words jumped off the page giving him images in his mind. He loved the adventure and even put himself in the book as James. He pretended to be on the adventure and enjoyed every page. This book can jump start any child's interest to read. This book installs creativity and a fun love to read in a child.

Iwasawa viewed cyclotomic fields as being analogues for number fields of the constant field extensions of algebraic geometry, and wrote a great sequence of papers investigating towers of cyclotomic fields, and more generally, Galois extensions of number fields whose Galois group is isomorphic to the additive group of p-adic integers. Leopoldt concentrated on a fixed cyclotomic field, and established various p-adic analogues of the classical complex analytic class number formulas. In particular, this led him to introduce, with Kubota, p-adic analogues of the complex L-functions attached to cyclotomic extensions of the rationals. Finally, in the late 1960's, Iwasawa [Iw 11] made the fundamental discovery that there was a close connection between his work on towers of cyclotomic fields and these p-adic L-functions of Leopoldt - Kubota.

Excerpt: Trapped in Time-Extinction
. He ran back to her and grabbed her hand. He pulled her over to the wall and whispered, “Can you climb the wall?”
“Not without getting splinters in my hands.”
Tyler followed Olivia up the wall and grabbed her hand. He pulled her forward and began jogging on top of the wall toward the north. Olivia saw the large backpack the man was carrying and wondered what was in it. She saw Destroyer Warriors on the ground below them but they didn’t look up. The uniform she wore had soles built into the feet. The soles were soft and they ran without making any noise. They covered a quarter of a mile when an almighty roar suddenly deafened Tyler.
He stopped running, went to a knee, and pulled his red blaster. He looked over the wall and saw the T-Rex running toward them from the south. “I’m going to kill that lizard!” Olivia went a knee as well and her heart went into her throat as the giant carnivore was running toward them through the brush next to the wall. It was going to be on them in moments. Tyler raised the beam gun and aimed at the Rex but it didn’t pause as it ran past them. It did look in their direction briefly, but that was all. Tyler lowered the blaster and shook his head. It was at that moment that he was shaken by a roar that shook the wall they were kneeling on. Tyler jerked his head back to the south and was stunned by what he saw. He whipped the whistle out of his shirt and blew it.
The Spinosaurus didn’t even pause as it continued moving toward them. “Oh Crap!”
Olivia looked at Tyler, “What?!”
“This one is a rogue and doesn’t recognize the whistle! Run!” Tyler grabbed her hand and pulled her. The roar was deafening and the giant was moving quickly toward them. It wasn’t as fast as the T-Rex but it wasn’t slow. Its smooth gait was eating up ground and it was going to be on them in moments. Tyler came to a sudden stop and grabbed Olivia, preventing her from falling. Destroyer Warriors were scrambling up on the wall and running toward them. Tyler looked back toward the oncoming giant and saw more warriors were climbing the wall to the south. He shook his head and pulled Olivia over to the edge of the wall. “Climb over the edge and drop to the ground.” Olivia looked at the approaching Spinosaurus and started shaking her head. Tyler grabbed her chin and forced her to look at him, “You agreed, no hesitation!” Tyler pulled her over the edge and he scrambled down to the ground. She tried to follow him but lost her grip halfway down. She fell back but Tyler caught her before she hit the ground. He grabbed her hand and started running along the wall.

Mind you I'll rewrite it in my head and enjoy doing it but really now

He rushed the story line so badly here I couldn't get invested in the characters or the story. Mind you I'll rewrite it in my head and enjoy doing it but really now, he could have done something really special here. The first two books were great but If I had read this one stand alone I wouldn't have finished it. Yes I know it's easy for a non writer to whine about a writer but I'm doing it anyway. There was so much promise here that he just seemed to fly by. I hope somewhere, sometime down the line you rewrite this and flesh out the story more. It's still a good read but I morn for the loss of the great read I feel it could have been. Ok rant over. I do enjoy his writing and will keep buying his books. This one just seemed a bit rushed and had so much promise in my view.

The first quarter of this book could easily have been added to the end of book 2, closing out the entire pirate scenario, and ending the story. Book 3 is not much more than an arrangement of bad plot twists and no clear way to answer the question of the Alien Time Takers. An entire series could be written about the space adventures and the development of "Mind Reading Children". Just too much cheese to end what was a great first 2 books.

Nice end to this unique sci-fi series!

Normally I don't like books that jump ahead too much between chapters but I have to make an exception in this case. This book added great literary symmetry to the series as a whole. Not an easy thing to do. If you're looking for a good sci-fi series, especially one that accurately deals with time travel, and has great character development, this is a one of a kind choice. Highly recommended. Very nice ending by the way.
