Excellent Handbook!!!

I first became aware of Dr. Gastel's book when she was quoted in an e book on medical writing written by one of her former students who has done quite well in the profession. As a disabled physician interested in developing my writing skills I felt that this might just be the information source I needed. I couldn't have been more correct. Her writing style is easy to follow and understand and the topics chosen for this book fully encompass the various areas that even a seasoned writer might find useful. She has also included numerous helpful websites. There aren't a lot of books available on this subject but there doesn't need to be when one such as this has been written. Thanks Dr. Gastel!!

Packed with info, but just a bit dry

Gives you lots of relevant contact info that you could choose from depending on the type of article you plan to write. Good for beginners but I see it as useful for advanced writers as well. Makes excellent points on what goes into writing a riveting and relevant article. Overall, I recommend it.

A Carefully Crafted Rip-off

Have you ever received a colorful package of materials from IMP (International Masters Publishers)? Has it amazed you with the company's generosity ("Enhancing your Mind Body Spirit gives away over $1,000,000 in free gifts!"), enchanted you with a feeling of mystery ("The secrets of Mind Body Spirit can now be yours...") and tickled you with a feeling that you're just plain special ("Congratulations! You've already been awarded a Free Gift Package.")? The deal sounds good enough. After all, it couldn't hurt to get a free sample valued at up to $47.95 and a free gift if you reply quickly. It only costs $9.95 for the next set of cards, so why not?

This product, along with IMP in general, is an example of manipulative marketing scams at their best. Throw away the solicitation you received now before you get sucked into spending well more money than you bargained for. Sure, each packet of 12 cards "only" costs $9.95 (more like $12 after postage and tax), but what they don't tell you is that there are some 99 packets in the collection. Even with their "savings" options, this means the entire set will run you up around $1000, with each two-sided color card costing $1 a piece. Given that you can buy better books covering the same material for a significantly less amount of money, steer widely clear of IMP's scam. The little extras they throw on don't make up for the inflated cost either. The essential oils, for instance, are always diluted in a carrier oil and of generally poor quality and while I liked some of the incense they sent, five small sized sticks is hardly generous.

It's really too bad that the product is such a scam to collect. After collecting about a dozen packets myself, I found a seller on eBay offering the completed set for about $130. This, I thought, was a pretty reasonable price, and it gave me a chance to evaluate the content on its own merits aside from the unfortunate marketing. There really is some great material in the set. The pages have the visually-oriented in mind and are full of beautiful color pictures, artwork, and diagrams. I particularly like the posters, whose beauty sometimes makes them suitable for wall decorations! While lacking authority given the absence of authors and a bibliography, if you're discerning, there are plenty of gems to mine from this product in spite of its occasional factual errors. The breadth of topics includes: aromatherapy, herbal remedies, stress relief and good sleep, healthy eating, a massage course, a meditation course, a yoga course, a feng shui course, spiritual healing, world healing traditions, friendship bonds, spiritual sexuality, interpreting your dreams, an astrology course, a tarot course, a palmistry course, fortune telling traditions, using crystals, charms and symbols, nature magic, casting spells, Wiccan traditions, spiritual experiences, the craft of mediums and clairvoyants, and encounters with ghosts. That's a lot of stuff, with some sections are longer than others. If I were rating the content alone, I would probably give it three stars (slightly above average). If you can manage to get the entire set for cheap like I did, you're bound to find something that you like. Otherwise, stay away from IMP; this set is nice, but not that nice.

Expensive but delightful

I've been collecting the cards for the Mind-Body-Spirit kit for over a year now, and I love it. On the downside, it's going to end up costing me QUITE a lot--at $11/month, I'll easily have spent over $200 by the time my collection is complete. On the other hand, I was given the option to collect the cards faster and easier--three times as many, for about $17/month, and I opted against it. Why? Because half the joy is the monthly arrival of the new cards! If I got three times as many in a month, I wouldn't be able to linger over them the way I can with a smaller collection per delivery.

And I *do* linger over them. The photography is beautiful, and each topic gives you a comfortable introduction, or overview, of the topic, whether it's a particular astrological sign or the uses for lemon in healing and magic. If you want in-depth explanations of certain topics, this kit may not be for you. But if you appreciate having a beautiful, glossy-paged overview of scores of topics, giving you a better idea what you might want to research, consider this kit.

As a bonus? At least every other delivery comes with an extra treat of some sort--a CD of relaxing music, a collection of sandalwood incense, a chunk of amethyst, etc.--which has some relation to one of the cards in that delivery.

Bottom line? If you just want to save money and get a book, avoid this. But if you want a reminder approximately every month (I think it's more like every third week) of your interest in exploring ghosts, chakras, healing herbs, and many other areas of mind-body-spirt consciousness? Consider this beautifully arranged kit.

Nice Reference, but SO expensive...

After canceling my membership with IMP, I tried to find the set through an online auction. That's right. I said SET! There are so many inserts...a COMPLETE series would NEVER fit in ONE binder. Please do not be duped or allow yourself to be lied to by a second-hand seller claiming that ONE binder/"book" contains THE ENTIRE, COMPLETE set. The "Natural Healing" section alone can fill up one binder!
If a seller fails or refuses to list all sections, chapters and page insert numbers they are either a.) too ignorant to know what they have (not the orginal owner) or b.) extremely dishonest and hope you will buy one binder that they "think" is complete.
Please be VERY careful when dealing with these individuals.

So...why did I cancel my subscription to IMP? I was getting duplicate inserts and items in the mail AND I was being double charged. Another reviewer mentioned buying the set outright. If I had to do it over, that is probably what I would have done -but I never saw IMP advertise this option.
I hope this helps someone avoid the mistakes that I made...

The photos, layout and design is really nice. Right now I'm weighing my options to decide whether to start over and just buy the set outright. I'm just not sure that for the price, it is THAT nice. :)

This is the third book in my Do-It-Yourself Java Games series and by far the biggest book yet.  These are the three books I had planned for this series from the very beginning.  I'm happy to finally have all three done. I hope you enjoy working on the games in this book.

I want to thank those of you who have left me such positive reviews.  These books take a lot of work to write.  Such positive feedback has encouraged me to continue writing more such books. So I'm not done writing yet.  I have ideas for more books that I might like to add to this series.

About the Author
Annette Godtland is a computer programmer who worked at IBM for 20 years then Kingland Systems Corporation for 5 years. She now considersherself to be a hobby programmer. She particularly enjoys programmingcomputer games and working with all forms of computer graphics.

Many years ago, Annette created course materials and taught a beginningprogramming class for 4th through 6th grade students. She enjoyed it somuch that she always wanted to try making her course into a book. Shefinally did it in her book: Do-It-Yourself Java Games: An Introductionto Java Computer Programming. This book was the first in a planned series of do-it-yourself Java programming books, intended for junior high tohigh school students as well as adults, as a means to explore aninterest in computer programming.

Annette compiled a detailed tutorial of all the tips, tools, andtechniques she has learned for getting a program to market, and forselling almost anything on the Internet, in her first book, This LittleProgram Went to Market. She currently sells her own software atgodtlandsoftware.com.

adding several more fun and interesting games to continue building skills

This 3rd book continues the excellence of author Annette Godtland's superb series of Do It Yourself Java Games titles. This book requires the knowledge of the first two books, and builds upon that knowledge most notably by adding threads, adding several more fun and interesting games to continue building skills, and to a lesser degree also introduces MVC. This is a terrific book!

There are many Java books, but Ms. Godtland's books are unique in several valuable ways:

First, these books are project based showing you step-by-step how to build very good games; most other books are based on the building blocks of Java, like a chapter on looping, a chapter on decision making, etc., and then perhaps having a few projects at the end.

Second, the 2nd and 3rd (this one) books are entirely GUI based (Swing) which is what all programmers want to do! No one wants System.out.println() console programming beyond the beginner stage.

Third, most books are like reading a transcript of a teacher's lecture; Ms. Godtland is trying for the print equivalent of a Q&A dialog where every page has fill-in-the blank questions for the reader. This requires thought, patience and active participation from the reader which will certainly result in a better understanding of the material.

If I could suggest anything for the 2nd edition of this book it would be to add a program flow diagram at the beginning of each project. That is, first a picture of the final game screen like the books have now, then add a SW flow diagram to show the overall layout of what we are going to create, then go into the step-by-step. Not something as elaborate as UML, just a nice map of classes and methods for the big picture.

And if I could suggest anything for the 4th book, it would be to use JavaFX.

motivated , well written, easy to read , nearly complete

This is a incredible book on applied functional analyses.Every topic is motivated with an applied problem.The definitions are motivated either by the aplication or by the subsequent use.There are remainders showing you the inteconections between the subjects and finally the index and the Symbols index are both complete and very usefull.The book is not complete. However he missing subjects usually are in the other colection by the same author.

Excellent account on modern operator theory

This well-written text covers the fundamentals of modern linear operator theory and points out most of its connections to other branches of mathematics and physics ( differential equations, integral equations, finite elements, elasticity, quantum mechanics, and more). It includes all the basic theory on Banach spaces, Hilbert spaces, orthogonality, Fourier series, etc., and a chapter on the PDE's of mathematical physics. The excercises are both illustrating and challenging. I find it useful for undergrads, graduate students, and as a reference for working mathematicians. Must read companion volume 109 also.

Indispensible to any serious student of Mathematics!

Prof. Zeidler has done the world of mathematicians an incredible service by writing this book. It is self-contained, very lucid, beautifully organised, and actually takes the trouble to relate various topics to each other. It makes the field of Functional Analysis more accessible to students taking their first course in it. It also is a handy reference for practicing mathematicians. I loved the little schematics in the book which point out connections between seemingly disconnected ideas. All in all- a great book. If you don't have it, and are interested enough in Math to be reading this review- go buy it!!!!

The debate about the sixties has long been overheated, polarised between those who see the decade as a 'golden age' and others who blame it for today's apparent social ills. Sixties Britain explores the real sixties, providing a detailed discussion ranging across pop, politics, postmodernism, fashion, feminism, foreign policy and much else besides, to show why it was a decade of such dramatic change, but not for the reasons usually cited.

 

Steering away from the ideologically charged accounts of Britain during this time, Donnelly neither romanticises nor demonises this most controversial of decades. He revisits assumptions about the decade and presents a more nuanced and engaging history of Britain in the sixties.

 

Sixties Britain brings together discussion of culture, society and politics, and concludes that the sixties left four main developments of lasting consequence:

·         The modern consumer economy was established, reaching across the social and generational divides as never before and transforming popular culture.

·         The growing preoccupation with individual autonomy changed the ways in which individual and civil rights were understood.

·         The full impact of post-war New Commonwealth immigration began to be felt, and many found it uncomfortable.

·         Finally, Britain turned away from Empire and moved towards Europe ¿ a direction that remains contentious forty years on.

 

Mark Donnelly is senior lecturer in history at St Mary's College. He has taught a wide range of courses on modern British, European and United States history. He has also appeared on radio and TV programmes about contemporary British society and culture. His is author of Britain in the Second World War (1999).

Important and informative but not for the faint of heart.

Wall is a heavy duty thinker - I wasn't expecting to see quotes from Hegel's "Lesser Logic." He knows a great deal about the history of art and of photography. For example, the most important works of art photographers were selling for $200 to $300 in the '60s. Think about that!
