The second half of this volume is focused on three particular applications of knot theory. Louis Kauffman discusses applications of knot theory to physics, Nadrian Seeman discusses how topology is used in DNA nanotechnology, and Jonathan Simon discusses the statistical and energetic properties of knots and their relation to molecular biology.

The Highland Menage series features 16 MacDougal brothers who pair up with outgoing, feisty wives in the late 1500s. These are the ancestors of Finan MacDougal, the irascible man who emigrated to North America in the 1820s and moved to Tanner's Ford, Montana Territory to ranch in 1844 (Bride Train series).

As part of my research I drove 1,000 miles across Highland Scotland in late September 2014, then took an Outlander historical tour (books by Diana Gabaldon, now also an excellent TV series), for a total of three weeks.

As Dunollie Castle (Dùn Ollaigh), is the seat of Clan MacDougall, I started there. I was honored to meet the man who will one day be Laird MacDougall over lands held by his clan more than 1,000 years since they first settled.

Much research followed on my return with maps, books, and Internet searches of genealogy, history, wildlife, and more. Lots more.  I spoke with a Master Weaver for "An Eager Widow" (book 5) and learned how to use a whip for "A Perfect Wife" (book 6). (Hint, wear a hat, eye protection, long pants and a thick shirt with long sleeves.)  I am posting some of this on my webpage for those of you who enjoy knowing the reality behind the fiction.

Many of the characters in this series were real people, especially the lairds. As much as possible I have included what I discovered about their characters. Laird Kenneth MacKenzie, Chief of the clan and 10th Lord of Kintail, whittled. He had a beard. He couldn't even sign his own name. His heir, Colin Cam, was blind in one eye. All these things appear in the series.

I hope you enjoy learning this trip to the late 16th century in  Highland Scotland.

The historical Clan MacDougall is descended from one of the sons of Somerled, 'King of the Isles', killed in 1164. At one time they possessed nine castles and over 250 square miles of land but they did not support the winning monarch and their land and castles were given to their ancient enemy, Clan Campbell.

In the fictional MacDougal clan in the late 16th century there are sixteen brothers under Laird Somerled MacDougal. He took over the clan as a youth because his father was too busy trysting with local women, ignoring his duties as laird.

Somerled insists his brothers, no matter how ragged and hungry, be brave men of honor, keeping their word no matter what, and are loyal to king and country. He's determined to end a 100-year curse by having his brothers marry women with dowries who will accept sharing a pair of brothers. Though they have little, the sixteen MacDougals value women and insist they receive pleasure, rare in those times.

Having been captured by his enemy, Gillis had been occupied with trying to find a way out of the pit prison when a woman masquerading as a boy is tossed in with him. Between them they come up with a plan to escape, but not before Fiona surrenders her virginity to Gillis, and Gillis vows to protect her with his life and offers her a hand fasting, with the understanding that she will also be wife to his brother, Angus. Fair warning, this book is only half the story—Gillis, Angus and Fiona’s story continues in the book Captive Love. This series features sixteen brothers, each pair finding a lady love and their story is told over the course of two books, before moving on to the next pair of brothers. These books are short enough that I would have preferred to have the stories compiled into one book per match, but it is, what it is. I was initially a little confused with the ending (or lack thereof), until I realized it continued in the next book—maybe it was just me. Light-hearted, fun read. I loved the two brothers, Gillis and Angus, and I can’t wait to meet the rest of the MacDougal clan!

Where's the last chapter?

It reads like it is. It's erotica more than just romance, though the dialogue is done rather well. It is well written, but I feel like we are missing the ending. I wanted the characters' reactions to the revelation and some type of confrontation. Still, if you want a Scottish historical erotica, this is a good book to go with.

The future of discourse analysis and linguistics

By incorporating analyses of discourse and social practices in language studies, Norman Fairclough succeeds in advancing the idea of language as a site of constant and dynamic struggles of people in society. This book shows us: first, how language both shapes and is shaped by society; second, how language in specific contexts can be designed and redesigned by contemporary discourse technologists to market people and products; and third, how language can satisfactorily be reshaped to change society towards emancipation and democracy. Read this book to understand aspects of contemporary society.

Helpful but redundant

Fairclough provides a very thorough framework for using CDA that I found helpful with my own research. However after the first few chapters, the book gets rather redundant.
For a nice rounded overview of CDA, I would strongly suggest Blommaert's "Discourse: Key topics in sociolinguistics." If I had a choice, I would have purchased Blommaert's book, and pulled articles from Fairclough's work. Fairclough's paper, "Critical discourse analysis and the marketization of public discourse" (available free through Google Scholar) will give you a taste of Fairclough's particular approach to CDA, and you can decide from there whether or not you would like to purchase the book.

formatting in kindle edition needs work

I used the kindle edition of this book for an undergrad course in stats, however, I really, really wish I had gotten it in print. The formatting is off so you can't read equations, graphics, graphs etc. clearly. Had to switch books because it was so frustrating, couldn't read the homework problems.

I am using this for a Statistics course that I am taking here: [...] The examples and explanations in this book are rock solid ! It's filled with plenty of example practice problems and homework problems.

it tries to explain things.

This book is pretty helpful in general but this will only apply to those who are good with math. For those who are like dummies in math, you will have hard time understanding the way equation works. It tries to explain things in a better tone with lots of example, but it needs more of explanation on how the equation came to be like that. If that's more explained, this book would be perfect for learning basic stats. Additionally, if you really want more complicated stats, this is not for you to study. This is the basics of all like ABC. If you want to write a sentence in terms of stats, then this will be to elementary for you.
