Amazing way to improve cardiac function

I'm not sure why Amazon is carrying this book since it is geared more for the medical community. I am a retired Critical Care RN and I found some of the info to be over my head in spite of my training and education post graduation. That said, I have to say it is one of the most valuable books I've ever read. My husband has non-ischemic cardiomyopathy secondary to a viral infection. He's had some medical issues recently after a 7 yr benign course. All of his MDs have been amazed by his ability to carry on with his daily activities such as building a room on the house, bush-hogging acreage with his 40 HP tractor, taking care of 2 homes and a pecan orchard. He's never needed supplemental oxygen despite an ejection fraction of 20-25. I decided to have a look at what this doctor had to say. Most drugs given for this problem relate to the muscle function as a whole, not to the cellular function of the muscle tissue. This book addresses the cellular function. Those of you who took biology may remember the Krebs cycle as well as ATP and mitochondrial function. That's what this is all about.
Bottom line is that Dr Sinatra recommends 4 supplements to improve cardiac health: CoEnzyme Q10, l-carnitine, magnesium and d-ribose. My husband had been on CoQ10 since 1991 for oral health (his dentist died. New dentist looked at old chart & thought he was looking at a different patient). He has also been taking magnesium for 15 yrs or so. Both of these contributed, I feel, to the fact that he functions at a higher level than would be expected for his ejection fraction (the % of blood pumped out thru the aorta from the left ventricle of the heart). Normal EF is 55-65%.
If you know someone who has difficulty functioning because of heart disease, this would be a good book to read and try the supplements. They are all over the counter and do not react with any prescription meds that I have been able to discover. I mentioned this book to one of my husband's MDs (nephrologist) and he wrote down the name of it and asked the nurse to order a copy for the office. There are many references in the book to various studies and the journals they were reported in. I checked some of them and all were exactly as quoted. I bought the Kindle version because it was cheaper but plan on getting a hard copy for other members of my family to read since I'm NOT loaning out my much loved Kindle!

UPDATE 4/22/16: I just found out from the nephrologist's office RN, a friend of mine, that he really did buy the book; read it and is now recommending the 4 supplements to all his pts who have cardiac disease. Since then I have purchased a complete set of the nutrients and had them sent to a close friend who also has cardiomyopathy from an MI. I will continue to make sure both hubby & friend stay on this combo as long as they are alive. Can't wait to see what Dec. scheduled ECHO will show on hubby.

UPDATE 12/31/2016: Just got back from Houston where hubby had another ECHO done. Reading by same MD as in Feb 2016 shows an increase of his Ejection Fraction to 30%. Prior ECHOs had all been about the same as listed above. This is the first improvement since 2009 when he was diagnosed. The only real change was the addition of the 4 nutrients. All the rest of his meds have been maintenance for many years. All I can say is that after 52 yrs of marriage, I'm not letting him get out of this marriage if I can help it! LOL

How come my " honored " Cardiologist back home in Nags Head, NC didn't tell me about this!

This is of utmost importance. At last I know how to help support the energy in the cells of my heart. Pretty useful, wouldn't you say? My wonderful Doctor, Robert McClean of New Port News, VA, let me read this book during a Chelation Treatment in his office, that cleans out my arteries. Wow! Why hadn't my honored Cardiologist back home in Nags Head,NC, tell me about this paradigm shift? I immediately ordered this book, Qunol Co Q-10, L-Carnitine, D-Ribose, and Full Spectrum Magnesium. Nattokinase was all ready part of my arsenal. As soon as these all arrived, I began a long needed journey back to feeling stronger. After 2 weeks, my Honey had to beg me to stop working, so that he could rest. I feel like I am starting to grow younger. A strange, but good feeling.

Book can be a lifesaver

A few years ago, I was hit with viral myocarditis which led to a case of dilated cardiomyopathy (a fancy name for congestive heart failure). As a former athlete in his fifties who had always stayed in pretty good shape, and who stayed quite active engaging in backpacking & other vigorous activities, I found this to be a particularly demoralizing situation. My ejection fraction was at 30%, and my cardiologist recommended a pacemaker if I could not rebound.

As someone with great familiarity with biochemistry and physiology (a degree in microbiology), I went to work researching my situation. I was not an expert on cardiac cells, but my research found results in that the cardiac tissue in cases like mine were starving for some of the building blocks of a cellular process known as oxidative phosphorylation. The 3 ingredients that seemed to be most needed were coenzyme Q, L-carnitine, and ribose, along with magnesium (a mineral essential for many different enzymes & coenzymes involved in energy metabolism). I immediately began taking dietary supplements involving the aforementioned ingredients.

About this time I heard of Sinatra's book about metabolic cardiology. (At the time it was not as well known as it is now). I purchased the book and studied it voraciously. I found that he had written a very informative book on the role of these supplements in the metabolism of the heart, and explained clearly why a heart that was in a state of dilative cardiomyopathy would need dietary supplementation. It was written in a style that a layman would be able to understand, but he gave the biochemistry and physiology background well enough to satisfy those at a higher level of understanding (like those with a scientific degree such as myself).

One of the points he made in his book was how the medical establishment pooh poohed the concept of dietary supplementation to help those with congestive heart failure. Yet the proof was in the pudding- his patients who took the supplements seemed to do better and had better survival rates than those who did not. I can back him up on his claim. My cardiologist never once mentioned any kind of dietary supplementation to me- he was strictly drugs & surgery (pacemaker).

Well, I must say, I was not cured overnight, but over a period of a couple of years, I made a full (and I mean full) recovery and I remain healthy to this day. My ejection fraction is normal, and I have no restrictions on exercising or activity. I could tell my cardiologist was quite amazed at how everything turned out. But he didn't realize I had another cardiologist in my corner- Steven Sinatra. If you or a loved one are having heart problems, read this book and follow it's recommendations. I still take the supplements he recommended to this day. And he may have very well saved my life. God bless Dr. Sinatra.

About the Author
Misha Glenny is the author of Dark Markek McMafia, The Rebirth of History, The Fall of Yugoslavia (which won the Overseas Press Club Award in 1993 for Best Book on Foreign Affairs), and The Balkans: Nationalism, War and the Great Power, 1804-1999. He was a BBC Central Europe correspondent-he covered the fall of Communism and the wars in the former Yugoslavia-and has been regularly consulted by the U.S. and European governments on major policy issues.

Even better than McMafia

A true tour-de-force, even better than McMafia. An amazing primer on the rise of favela culture, humanized by the portrayal of one of its most notorious Don's. Unravels the socio-economic complexities in Rio while also revealing the dysfunction of Rio law enforcement. A true "page-turner" despite the over use of the phrase and couldn't recommend it more highly. Bravo!

Terrific!

I picked up this book from the library on a whim and couldn't put it down! It is extremely well written and researched making you feel as if you are actually in the midst of the story. It answered a lot of questions that I always had about Rio de Janeiro, and more specifically the culture and politics of the infamous favelas as well as the country at large. This isn't a story about a sociopathic criminal, rather it details instead how an ordinary, decent, hardworking initially law abiding human being who was simply trying to play the cards he was dealt, found himself drawn into the vortex of crime through sheer (and very sad) desperation. With the 2016 summer Olympic Games fast approaching, this book makes for an especially compelling read. It is a tragic, haunting and exciting story that will keep you turning each page long into the night.

Rio, crime bosses -- great adventures -- marvelous stories

This is a fascinating story, well told but for some over the top sections that could have benefitted from some more careful editing.

The "hero" owned a vast section of Rio, and there are many echoes of the Godfather in Mario Puzo's The Godfather . Francisco Bonfim Lopes is just an ordinary guy who understands how to get ahead in a very complex world. Crime, of course, but he fills a very important governmental function in a part of Rio where the formal government does not function, some times at all, often badly, and almost never well.

It is fascinating to read about all of the various activities he engaged in, and to marvel really that Glenny was able to earn Lopes' confidence enough to see this rise to power from the inside.

If you have any interest in the fascinating history of Rio or Brazil, or in crime bosses wherever located, you will enjoy the story and make allowances for the writing.

This book surpasses typical Christian literature. It provides insight into the next season for the body of Christ. Because of it's prophetic nature, its not relevant to the carnal Christians who only sees the HERE AND NOW! It's not a book to be read, but a book to studied...

Read, Meditate, Study, Apply!!! Good!!!

I am always interested and drawn to things written from the Kingdom of God perspective. About ways that we, as believers, do not belong to this world but to the Kingdom of God. I am drawn to this first and foremost by the Holy Spirit. It helps me, helps us all, to see things in this light.

This book has seemed to "strike a match" in my spirit...so to speak...for through the reading of it the Lord has rekindled my faith as well as my prayer life. I feel as though I've been "re-ignited" which is just what I've been searching for in my heart and for what I've been seeking and praying to the Lord for.

Not a book to be taken lightly as in a light read. Not to be read in a public place if you are like me...one who cries when the Lord has spoken to me. You can only read this book in little increments or at least you SHOULD only read it this way as you will want to meditate upon what it was you read to get the most out of it.

I was touched by the Holy Spirit at every turn of this book and needed to step away from the reading in order to give my full attention to what all the Holy Spirit was wanting to say and do.

Did I say that Holy Spirit ministered to me through this book? Through this author?

A few points taken from this book which I share to give you a "taste" of the "flavor" of this book are and I quote:

"Chances are, whatever touches your heart in what you see day to day also touches the heart of God."

"It's time for us to find our footing and start pushing back for the things Jesus came to this earth to deliver."

"If we never realize the authority God has given us, the enemy has no reason to relinquish his."

There are many other meaty truths which I believe will pack a powerful punch in the face of the enemy and give glory to God!

Thinking now...I may just highlight these points and keep this book around awhile...continue to meditate and apply what it is I learn.

Can't Put it Down...

Cindy Trimm is a woman who definelty knows how to let God use her. I love her books and this one has not disappointed. I can't put it down, just got it yesterday and wow, is all I can say. If you have trouble on every side, then use the techniques in this book and the others in her series to take control and understand the enemy of your soul. Thanks again Dr. Trimm.

A good introduction to the history of economic ideas

I like this book. It covers the basics of economic thought from the Ancient World to the present day. I especially liked his treatment of the development of modern economics, and how it came to be so heavily mathematical. But the urge for clinical detachment by economists will never quite take hold, as economics is a deeply emotional subject. Economics taps into our primal instincts for survival.

A much more detailed book on the rise of mathematical economics is "How Economics Became a Mathematical Science" by E. Roy Weintraub.

Wouldn't get an A on a high school project

I have read only a bit more than ten percent of the Kindle edition of this book, but I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone. It's not that it's completely worthless; it provides some context, but statements such as this one from very early in the book give pause:

"By Aristotle's time it was widely accepted that all things were built up from common units (atomism). Geometry was based on point, arithmetic on the number '1', and so on to the physical world. It was believed that this meant that different phenomena were commensurable in the sense that they could similarly be expressed as ratios of whole numbers. This was why it had been a great blow to the Pythagoreans to discover that there were irrational numbers like 11 or 2 that could not be expressed as ratios."

Now it's possible that the author had written the square root of 2 instead of "11 or 2" but even so a mistake as glaring as this one should never appear. It causes one to have grave doubts about the accuracy of the rest of the book.

Accuracy aside, though, the writing seems to have been thrown together from random thoughts and not had the benefit of carefully editing. It's not that the random thoughts are completely unorganized, just that they don't seem to do much in the way of presenting an organized presentation. The quotation above is typical.

So. Accuracy in doubt and a bit casual in approach. I can not recommend it.

Disappointing, Inaccurate, and Ideological

This is a very disappointing book. The author skims some of the most important developments in modern economics like the Real Business Cycle theory and barely delves into rational choice while spending an inordinate amount of time discussing both the Marxist and Austrian schools of economics which are very minor heterodox traditions. The author also wastes many pages discussing the economic ideas of Xenophon, Plutarch, French physiocrats, and numerous mercantilist thinkers who should be lost to history. The book should have weighed more on the economic developments of 1860 to the present day.

The book makes numerous inaccurate statements. When discussing people complaining about "high and discriminatory" freight rates in the Midwest during the arguments of anti-trust he doesn't spend a second to actually analyze the economics of those claims which turn out to be false. He claims that resources are becoming more scarce when, since I assume the author is educated in economics, means that the price of many resources should be going up over the long run. As Julian Simon shows, the opposite is occurring over the long run - especially when you measure the output of those resources like the price per BTU. The author claims that the socialist calculation debates ignores institutions. Much of that debate focused on the existence and variety of institutions between socialist and capitalist economies. The author ignored the economic success of Hong Kong when discussing the "strong and authoritarian governments" of East Asia like Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore (not authoritarian) that developed as if development requires authoritarianism. The author ignored the pro-free market and non-racist/authoritarian development economist P.T. Bauer who was right in his critiques of mainstream development economics DECADES before anybody else event thought critically of development aid. Gordon Tullock is not "right-wing" as the author claims.

The book is also unfortunately ideological. The author points out whenever an economist is right-wing but rarely when he is left-wing. It's annoying and doesn't expose anything except the author's ideological predilections.

Overall, this book isn't worth reading if you want a good history of economic thought.
