Everything a modern yogi needs in one reference.

The integration of eastern and western principles has been simmering in the melting pot of yoga the past hundred years. A key moment in the progress of yoga is Jivamukti Yoga in the East Village of Manhattan in the early 1990's. The torch has been passed and the next generation is ready to carry the light forward.
This volume is both a practical guide with visual reference, diagrams and images of yoga sequencing, as well as a theoretical statement about the aims and means of yoga. It could be used as a source text for a general study of yoga in a scholastic or university program as well as a modern vocational yoga teacher training. The book is also a personal journey to honor three great Indian gurus and includes practical advice on how or why to choose a yoga teacher.
Although I am biased as a 20+ year practitioner of Jivamukti and a 10+ year teacher, I stand by my objectivity in assessing this volume to be the best overall guide to yoga available today.

Jivamukti laid out

This is an excellent book setting out the personal, spiritual, political, psychological, ethical, musical and physical aspects of Jivamukti yoga. It is highly readable, well laid out and accessible. But not simplistic. It is a solid, fascinating read that weaves yoga, philosophy, ancient terms, quotations and modern life issues seamlessly into a lovely whole. Kind of like the Jivamukti practice itself.

Now - when are they going to release a DVD of their full length Jivamukti class? Soon please - for those of us whose nearest Jivamukti accredited teachers are an hour and a half drive away.

Certain chapters such as the one on Karma and the one on vegetarianism stay in your mind and while confronting, work away at you. Mine chapters on these topics are covered in myriad margin notes. As a farm raised girl I thought some of the comments about not using milk from cows or eggs from chickens because of cruel animal practices reflected a very old view of choices about these options. For example, in Australia we have options of free range organic eggs certified as being from chickens who do run around outside in the sun, eat natural food only and walk voluntarily to their bird cages at night for food, shelter, fresh straw and to avoid being attacked by foxes. I of course agree totally with their comments about battery farming of hens as being cruel and unacceptable. Similarly their material on cow milk production did not cover cruelty organic free options now available. I read recently that the Dalai Lama had tried to be vegetarian but failed, so I guess he and I are struggling with the ethics of this. It would be terrific if in an updated version of the book they delved into such options so those of us not quite there yet have a pathway to get us there which is not the cold turkey route.
The authors are magnificent physical specimens so the arty black and white photography is not only aesthetically pleasing, it shadows the muscles starkly, so you can see the definitions appropriate for each pose. The break out boxes are useful for added detail but the font size is miniscule. I had to use a magnifying glass to be able to read them. The break out boxes break up the page in interesting ways, so look great, but the tiny font size means many readers could miss the detail contained within. It would be great to have the break out box contents reappear at the end of each chapter as Endnotes at the normal font size.

Jivamukti Yoga is a relatively new practice, but it is based on the ancient and sacred teachings of the Yoga Sutra: non-harming, and the settling of the mind to uncover our true nature. The teachings are not watered down to make them more palatable to the Western temperament. I appreciate this. The physical practice is vigorous. As far as the book itself, it is well-written. The photos of the posture sequences are a bit small, but they give the reader a sense of the sequencing. If you really want to experience Jivamukti Yoga practice, I recommend getting one of their videos out of the library, or better yet get to a class if there is one near you.

I have owned - and read - this book for many years. For anyone who has had an interest in delving in to the world of theatre which is on the very edge of discovery, read this book. Take a group of ethnically diverse actors, a carpet, a pair of boots, a very rough idea and a collection of small African villages, some of whom have never encountered anyone from outside their own small community, and you have the perfect mix for rediscovering the true meaning of theatre. At one and the same time massively amusing and wonderfully inspiring, enter into the world and the mind of the 20th century's most creative forces - Peter Brook.

I work for a small non profit that hired freelancers to build a brand new website. Couple months after we launch and our previous healthy enrollments tank. Website is the only thing that's changed. I had taken part in a webinar with Evan and thought he might be able to help us get to the bottom of the issue. Sadly, his rate was beyond our budget but he offered to share the manuscript of the book before it was published. Not exaggerating to say that he saved us. Turns out that because we had a new site, we were basically invisible to all of the internet for 6-12 months while we built up credibility with the Google bots. Because of this book, we were able to proactively make ourselves known using white hat tactics and turn things around. If I ever meet him in person, he's earned a lot of free drinks.

Really enjoyed this book. It's surprisingly easy to read and to follow. It has humor and you won't drift off in boredom. Plus it's really helpful and, it's already improved my SEO.

The Title Didn't Lie

Not being an SEO whiz I didn't really believe that Evan could simplify this subject enough for me. The book not only simplified the topic but Evan also injected enough humor to give you a few chuckles along the way.

I also liked the fact that he broadened the subject just enough (running a business, social media) to give you a better view of how SEO can help. He was humble enough to tell us his big screw-ups.

Almost skipped the chapter on Bing/Yahoo because like most people I thought search begins and ends with Lord Google. Picked up some very insightful pieces on the two minority players.

I realize now that if you are not using Google analytics (free) then you are hurting yourself. If Francis Bacon was alive today he would say Google Analytics is Power.

Now I have to go back and look at Evans previous titles.

Great book for those that are intimidated by the topic.

Absolutely Fabulous!!

Lend me your ears, I'm going to sound like James Brown here, Please , Please, Please, do yourself a big favor & get this excellent book, and let me give you a few tips when taking the exam, first and foremost, relax, read each question 3 times before you make a decision, don't spend more than 4 min. on each question, move on mark that question, that you are having trouble with and come back to it. This book really goes into detail and helps you move along, and slowly builds your confidence. Trust me, you will pass take a deep breath and "Relax" before this book, I had some trouble with the math, and this book will help you!! PSI, also, has a practice test for $19, you can take before you take the test, that is also worth it. This book is a hands down 5 STARS, Superb!!

Additional Study Guide

First, I have zero experience in the practice of real estate. I bought this book after failing my first state (MI) exam two weeks after taking the required Michigan 40-hour course. I literally wrote out EVERY definition in the back of the book, plus read each chapter minus the broker chapter. I used the written definitions as I read through the book and found that the book is so much more thorough than what any 40 hour required class could every cover. I'm thrilled to say that this past Friday I took the test again, and passed! I felt so much better prepared and more confident after using this book (Guide to Passing the PSI Real Estate Exam, 6th Edition Update). My test included many questions I know I would have got wrong, had I not used this book, mainly because it just wasn't covered in the 40-hour course. So, to make a long story short, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering taking the state required course.

Dispel Your Ignorance

Anyone considering taking either their test to be a real estate salesperson or a broker has no doubt attended the requiste classes. Normally this occurs over a period of time. Here in PA a candidate for broker has to attend 240 hours of class room instruction plus deliver multi-year proof of practice.
Even the best of students amongst us is going to forget some of the class room content about Agency, Property Ownership, etc. after numerous classes over a multi-year period (broker).
The Guide to Passing the PSI Real Estate Exam is a great condensed overview of what most states want their broker candidates to demonstrate proficiency in. Included are practice tests so you can be familar with the way the testing companies structure questions. In addition, each chapter has questions at the end to test a candidate's knowledge of that particular chapters material. The answer key directs you to the section in the chapter you are weak on. I highly recommend this book for anyone considering taking their license test.

About the Author

Grant McCracken has been the director of the Institute of Contemporary Culture and a senior lecturer at the Harvard Business School. Now a member of the branding cultures laboratory at MIT, he has authored several books, including Culture and Consumption II (IUP, 2005), Big Hair (1996), Culture and Consumption (IUP, 1990), and Transformation (IUP, forthcoming). How new ideas gain approval through customer critical mass

This book serves as a guide on how to gauge the acceptance process of an innovation (The Flow) by a group of consumers (The Flock) and how many industries such as Fashion, Music, Hollywood, & Restaurants along with products such as Samuel Adams & Pabst Blue Ribbon beers manage this process.

pp. 159-175 contain referenced sources for each of the chapters.

With over 40 concepts that I wrote down for this review, I will mention a few here.

The definition of a flow: " ...any innovation that emerges at the chaos end of the continuum and moves across it by fighting off competitors, recruiting new enthusiasts, commandeering new resources, taking on momentum, and scaling up steadily...consist(ing) of three flows: economic, cultural, and brand. Each is a necessary condition of the next. Without an economic flow, there is no hope of a cultural flow. Without a cultural flow, there is no hope of a brand flow. Each of these flows is a result of a lot of little flows."

The definition of a flock: "...are groups of consumers moving through the marketplace as innovations enter the stream."

The definition of a brand: "It is a contract with the consumer that promises quality, consistency, and reliability. It is a relationship; one we hope the consumer will find enduring. It is a badge for the functions and utilities that the branded product makes available. Not least, the brand is a bund of meanings."

On being a brand manager: "It is his or her job to determine the meanings that will make the brand go, to stay in touch with the consumer to see when and how these meanings must be changed to ground the brand so that is meanings are consistent, to fine tune them to see that they are current, and to coax and coordinate great work from the meaning makers--advertising agencies, direct marketing, PR, event marketing, websites, retail communications, promotions, and so on."

A much-needed look across the entire product life cycle

This is such a provocative and interesting tour de force. McCracken attempts to formalize thinking about how self-organizing ideas and fads emerge out of the cultural "ether" -- or in his terminology, the chaos at the origins of the Kauffman Funnel -- to diffuse, evolve and become consecrated as confirmed trends. He offers a road map from a wide number of creative industries -- e.g., fashion, film and music -- that will enable corporate marketers to catch a new "thing" that's swirling around in the zeitgeist's whirlpool, track it and make better decisions as to when to get in or out of the phenomenon at all phases of the product life cycle: from the earliest, most chaotic stages of development through portfolio selection to production or, if purchasing, supply chain mgmt in terms of when to get on or off the wave. This is no small feat. He's exhaustive in developing this protocol from multiple lens -- technology, consumer, corporation. Not to mention that his scholarship is wide ranging, thorough and insightful.

Just can't keep it down

Wonderful book. This books does not teach you marketing like Professors do, it explains you marketing treating you as human beings and captures your attention as every page surprises you with such insights that the world of marketing gets clearer and clearer. I wish I had read this book in the beginning of my MBA course but anyway I am now reading for my MBA dissertation and I am glad that I read it.

Highly recommended! a book that my book shelf definitely deserves.

A Roadmap for Trading Success

This is a very good book. Trading is challenging for most people because they simply don't have tools or confidence to successful. Llewelyn James has put together a book that solves these problems and others. This book covers so many topics it's difficult to really do it justice in a short review. I have done many of the things new traders do: read books, watch videos, attend seminars, subscribe to newsletters, learn technical analysis and so on. Indeed, I found myself smiling at some of the things the author identifies as either mistakes are activities of low value because I recognized an earlier version of myself in those descriptions. Most of the information you get out there is really designed to enrich the trainer without really leaving the trainee with the necessary tools and proper thinking in order to be successful. There is no magic solution or some voodoo indicator that will bring you success because if there was, it would quickly be learned by an uncountable number of traders and then arbitraged into uselessness. That is why this book is important - it tells it like it is. And then, after giving you the straight goods on what the markets is really like, and what you can realistically expect, the author goes on to explain what to do about it. It's like having an experienced trader sit down with you and say: "This is what it is, this is why it is, these are the tools you need, this is how you use them and this is why". Remarkably, the training and tools that you will get are essentially free. Yeah, the book costs a couple bucks but that's a stupidly low price for what you get. Talking about the cost of the book doesn't make sense. The value is so high compared to the price that you should just read it. Clearly the author is not in it for the money (like 99% of the rest of the industry). Read it just to see how a real trader thinks and approaches the market or read it because you really don't know what you are doing and this book will tell you. Whatever the reason, you will learn something by reading it.

One of the major highlights of this book are the fantastic tools. The websites (all free), the training videos (free again) and the decorrelated trading systems (yep, free) offer just about anyone something new to look at and consider. I found it interesting to see how the author set up the websites and how he uses the tools on those websites.

Another big highlight was the backtesting. This is something so many books don't even consider (many other trading books show patterns and indicators and how to use them but there is never any indication about testable expectation of profit). If you want to trade in the market, you should at least have some expectation of profit and a reason for that expectation. Otherwise, it's just random trading. Proper backtesting gives you the confidence to move forward in the markets and the author has done a commendable job in introducing the reader to what is needed to develop this skill.

The author also covers a lot of other need-to-know trading knowledge. In the markets, you can't manage return but you can manage risk. Proper risk management will save you long enough for you to be successful. The author does a good job of explaining where to put the stops and what position size to use.
This book is an introductory/intermediate course in trading. At any point, you could jump off and do a deeper study of the many topics presented.

So if you want a quick start that gets you safely started with credible processes and realistic expectations, then you won't go wrong reading this book. If you are not successful in your trading or if you are looking to start trading, this book will help you along the road to trading success.

A truly practical, intelligent and 'honest' approach to stock trading for novice investors

This book is a complete road map for anyone serious about learning how to research and trade stocks with just a handful of technical tools with some fundamentals added. This book is not about day trading.

In his own words, the author's goal is "...to cut losing trades quickly and let winning trades run without getting scared and hitting the 'take' profit button."

There is no expensive software to buy or monthly newsletters to subscribe to.

The author provides all the necessary free websites you can access to set up your own stock screening chart templates. He goes to great lengths on how set up each template and how to incorporate them into his proven trading strategies. All his explanations are clear and concise. The only concept I at first had trouble grasping was his use of the word leverage, meaning account margin.

If you know absolutely nothing about stock trading the author first gives you a website you can look up and in a couple hours you will understand most of the terms used in this book. In addition, throughout the book the author suggests all these other wonderful books to read for further reference.

There are literally thousands of books on the subject of stock trading. Only a few I could recommend, especially for the novice Trader. And this book is one of them!!!

After 20+ years of trading, I can easily separate good trading books from bad ones. This book is a very good book. Llewelyn definitely sounds like a trader who has been around the block, and he doesn't try to sugarcoat things. He gives it to you straight. Very easy to read, too - the author has a very developed writing style. Reading this book is a must!

Global Competency is presented as a key component in the career development of Global Mobility Professionals. Furthermore, the author explores the areas in which knowledge and skills can be developed. Part 5: Case Studies and Tasks. The case studies from our daily business serve the reader to engage with various international mobility challenges. With a total of 11 tasks, a survey of technical terms and a collection of links, the reader can intensively deal with the subject matter. Das Arbeitsbuch "The Global Mobility Workbook - A step by step Guide to managing International Assignments" gibt einen pragmatischen Überblick zum Thema internationale Entsendungen für HR Fachkräfte, Linienverantwortliche und Global Mobility Professionals, die am Anfang ihrer Karriere stehen. Es ist gut geschrieben, und hilfreich fand ich auch die Graphiken, Beispiele und Aufgaben. Als Coach schätze ich vor allem die Fallstudien international tätiger Führungskräfte, die beschrieben werden und deren Herausforderungen bei Auslandseinsätzen sind anschaulich. Das Buch lädt ein zur tieferen Auseinandersetzung mit internationalen Entsendungen und globalen Karrieren und bietet einen guten Einstieg in das Thema für verschiedene Leute, z.B. auch für Studierende.

Recommended and Very Helpful

Angela Weinberger has written an amazingly helpful book for those in Global Transition (GT) consulting, for those in the business of sending, and for those receiving new Global Nomads. Global Mobility has changed from being for only the top levels of the management in their “training tracks” to moving highly skilled professionals, including specialists, all over the world.

Angela has put to pen the results of years of practical consulting experience in this field and has produced a tool that is a useful guide giving practical solutions for the GT specialist and the Global Nomad. The Global Mobility Workbook gives not just theory and trends but also concrete strategies and very helpful business cases for practical guidance for the GM trainers and coaches and other related people (HR departments, recruiters). I would add this is helpful for those Global Nomads who are moving with little or no company support.

Not only are the needs of the assignee addressed, but also the spousal experience is given equal importance in the workbook. This I find a key to success of the global assignment: the positive aspects of the spouse. There is also some focus on the requirements on competencies and career development of both the assignee and spouse.

I personally found a lot of helpful information in this book, first for the growing global mobility community and also for all who are involved in international assignments. For me this book is very empathetic and sensitive to the needs of all the people involved in a global transition. Although the book is quite compact (with its 93 pages) it contains a lot of helpful tables, templates, checklists, graphs, and statistical information. If you're interested or involved in Global Mobility this book is a "must have" for you.
