Electric tattooing as we know it today was invented in New York City at the turn of the 19th century. In the first days of American tattooing, tattoos were primarily worn by sailors and soldiers, outlaws and outsiders. The visual language of what came to be known as “traditional tattooing” was developed in those early days on the Bowery and catered to the interests of the clientele. Common imagery that soon became canon included sailing ships, women, hearts, roses, daggers, eagles, dragons, wolves, panthers, skulls, crosses, and popular cartoon characters of the era. The first tattooists also figured out that using bold outlines, complimented by solid color and smooth shading, was the proper technique for creating art on a body that would stand the test of time. In the over 100 years since then, techniques and styles have evolved, and the customer base has expanded, but the core subject matter and philosophy developed at the dawn of electric tattooing has persisted as perennial favorites through the modern era.

While most tattoos are inherently ephemeral, transported on skin until the death of the collector, a visual record exists in the form of tattoo flash: the hand-painted sheets of designs posted in tattoo shops for customers to select from. Painted and repainted, stolen, traded, bought and sold, these sheets are passed between artists through one channel or another, often having multiple useful lives in a variety of shops scattered across time and geography. The utility of these original pieces of painted art has made it so that original examples can still be found in use or up for grabs if you know where to look.

Vintage Tattoo Flash draws from the personal collection of Jonathan Shaw—renowned outlaw tattooist and author—and represents a selection of over 300 pieces of flash from one of the largest private collections in existence. Vintage Tattoo Flash spans the first roughly 75 years of American tattooing from the 1900s Bowery, to 50s Texas, through the Pike in the 60s and the development of the first black and grey, single-needle tattooing in LA in the 70s. The book lovingly reproduces entirely unpublished sheets of original flash from the likes of Bob Shaw, Zeke Owen, Tex Rowe, Ted Inman, Ace Harlyn, Ed Smith, Paul Rogers, the Moskowitz brothers, and many, many others relatively known and unknown.

About the Author
Jonathan Shaw is a world traveling outlaw artist, novelist, blogger, head doctor, anti-folk hero, whorehouse philosopher, legendary tattoo master, and notorious innovator and creator of underground art. Shaw was born in NY to big band legend Artie Shaw and movie star Doris Dowling, and was raised in LA where he learned to tattoo on the legendary Pike boardwalk from old-school California masters. After running with the likes of Jim Morrison, the Manson Family, and Charles Bukowski, he fell prey to heroin addiction and a life of crime. He finally left 1970s Hollywood to travel the world and founded Fun City, the first street tattoo shop in NYC since tattooing was decriminalized in the 1960s.

Important history of the business.

I collect all old flash repo--this one is among the best. Amongst all the bad drawings obviously copied from old ads, magazines, comic books, and other sources, you'll find really tight classic stuff (Bob Shaw, Zeke Owen). All of it is fascinating, no matter how old and ugly.

About the Author
DOUWLEEN BREDENHANN was born in Windhoek, Namibia on 19 September 1954. She grew up in Port Elizabeth, Windhoek and the Northern Cape. She studied art in Pretoria for a year and thereafter completed a BA in Political Science and Public Administration at the University of Stellenbosch. She is married to Steph, a civil engineer. After a number of years in the Northern Cape, the family now lives in the Western Cape. Since 1988 the course of her life has been largely shaped by the horrific murder of their eldest daughter at the tender age of eight.

A Starting Point for Grieving Parents

A true-life story of a mother's experience of the brutal murder/attempted rape of her 8 year old daughter by a 16 year old neighbour's son.

Clearly written as a much-needed catharsis, LIVING WITHOUT LIESL is a harrowing read, translated from the original Afrikaans. While there are moments of deep wisdom, the overall tone of the book is bitter and furious, although in the last twenty pages a tone of quiet acceptance begins to creep in.

Some advice is detailed for other grieving parents and reflects a projection of a smouldering anger onto the unsuspecting folk who don't quite know how to react to the tragic circumstances, or who react clumsily. These (mostly) well-intentioned folk are often berated for being "insensitive" to the grieving parents' needs, or for making "inane" comments. Apparently a common reaction of persons suffering deep grief, this attitude did distract me. The final pages contain a heartrending letter to the murderer of young Liesl.

After reading the book, I was left with a lingering despair at the dark depths to which humanity will sink. The telling of this story raises many questions: where is the justice in a legal system that counts a child's life, given up in final moments of unimaginable terror, worth only twelve years in prison? The youthful murderer `Piet Strydom' served only five years; he was around twenty-one when he was released, with a lifetime of possibility ahead of him, while his victim lies dead in the ground. Can a mother ever overcome such a fundamental breach of all her hopes and dreams for her beautiful daughter?

A personal story, LIVING WITHOUT LIESL offers a starting point for other parents who have suffered as grievously and who may identify with the pain still permeating the lives of Liesl's family.

Substance Abuse; Info for School Counselors - Review

This book clearly explains the relationship an addict has with their drug of choice, so that someone who may never have used/abused can understand the seemingly irrational behavior of the addict. But, the author does not stop there. Harrison goes on to explain various reasons why the addict's family may knowingly or unknowingly support the addict's habit, thus keeping the addict from recovery.

Good introduction

This was one of the textbooks for a class I took. It's a good introduction to the subject. I would have liked to see more details in some of the examples -- specifically where the case, aspect, or tense being discussed is not part of English grammar. Because it can be difficult to grasp these foreign concepts, it would be helpful to devote a little more space to thoroughly explaining and demonstrating them. Nevertheless, it's a good source for basic information about the general principles of morphology.

This is one of the best books on narrow footprint houses. Page after page of some of the most interesting examples of narrow footprint houses that are not row, or town houses. There are plenty of photos and floor plans to see. A great source for examples of houses for narrow lots, or tiny sites.

"Narrow Houses: New Directions in Efficient Design" by Avi Friedman (Princeton Architectural Press) deal with another kind of situation altogether. The shoebox home. Defining `narrow' as a structure with a street-facing facade of 25 feet or less, Friedman highlights a broad array of solutions for maximizing usable space while creating the necessary flow for the limited environment.

Houses from Amsterdam to Japan (where one pictured home is a mere nine feet wide!) are showcased, many using the latest modern, cutting edge design, but all with a mind towards maximizing use of open space, vertical integration and that ever elusive `flow' to make things seem imminently livable despite the cramped space. Lots of stairways and glass windows and walls are used to open up these spaces, as Friedman cites examples from freestanding structures to rows of tiny fronted townhomes.

Beyond the examples, Friedman explains the reasoning behind the re-emergence of the narrow home movement in terms of environment and economic and social impact as well as the issues to be aware of (footprint, duplexes, yard space, etc.) when dealing with this type of development. As urban areas get more crowded, (though narrow homes are even expanding to suburban and certain rural areas), the issues presented here will become more and more useful to builders everywhere. Better Days - A Workbook that Works

My name is Michelle Hurrell, a Certified Peer Support Specialist and Certified WRAP Facilitator and I have used Craig Lewis' book with clients. A big part of WRAP is personal responsibility, which is not about taking blame for terrible things that happen, but instead, trusting ourselves to deal with the aftermath. We cannot change our experience of mental illness, addiction or trauma, but we can become resilient and decide to begin again. Each module from resiliency to working through pain to choosing better ways to react asks the reader to look inside themselves for the answers. This is not to say that Mr. Lewis does not guide the reader through the pages, because he does. He asks poignant questions and asks the reader to provide examples from their own experience. Using this workbook, myself, reminded me of what Kahlil Gibran said about teaching, "No man can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge". This book has guided me and others through difficult times by encouraging one to look inside and dig deep to figure out where the heartache began. Mr. Lewis knows one can find his or her way out of the darkness of depression and trauma, if they look inside themselves and ask the important questions such as, "What are two things that you do in life that have meaning to you?" Such a question may seem simple, but difficult to answer when in the valleys of depression. Meaning and purpose are key to having "better days" and Mr. Lewis knows this, because he has lived it and offers the wisdom of his journey to us within these pages. I recommend this to anyone who is struggling, knows someone who is struggling or is facilitating a group meant to help those struggling. You won't come to the last page unchanged.

Through gentle guidance, and a can-do spirit, this workbook is a great way to help maintain your mental health.

Really good workbook for after being diagnosed with mental illness. The author, Craig Lewis, provides a question, problem, or anecdote to read and prompting you to relate it to your own life, the next page has 3 questions and space for you to answer. Setting aside 20 minutes a day to do this helps me to check in with my emotions. Reading these pages gives me optimism about living well with a mental illness. It helps me to figure out what to do when I am more ill. It seems like there is no situation that can't be handled with this guidebook. It should be used in addition to medical help, of course. Craig Lewis even recommends using it with a therapist. I think at the end of the day, what I most appreciate from using this guidebook is knowing that I am not alone in my struggles to maintain my mental health.

Better Days: A Retrospective

Mental illness, addiction, and other non-visible ailments are tough. Often, mental illness puts us in the role of the victim: we suffer from mental illness, we are addicts. These sicknesses of the mind can force us into becoming shadows of ourselves - we are told that we are less than human by way of mental differences. In my experience as a recovering alcoholic and a long-time depressive, treatment can be a means to shrug off responsibility, admit defeat, and use our illness to excuse living half as well as we should.

I got in touch with Craig through my friend Sean as we were talking about mental illness and addiction. At the time, I was still in the thick of poor living habits and unhealthy substance intake. I interviewed Craig for my blog and purchased a copy of better days following a successful transcription. Fast forward several months and I have decided to get sober and put my recovery first. Granted, I enlisted in a program that helped give me the necessary tools to soften my triggers and bolster my ability for success.
