About the Author
Jodie Taylor received her PhD in Musicology from Griffith University, Australia. She was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Cultural Sociology at the Griffith Centre for Cultural Research (2009-12), and is currently a Research Fellow at the Queensland Conservatorium Research Centre. She has published numerous articles on aspects of queer culture, popular music and ethnography and is currently co-editing three anthologies on erotic cultures, festivalisation and mainstream music.

About the Author

Ramesh Raskar joined the Media Lab from Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories in 2008 as head of the Lab's Camera Culture research group. The group focuses on developing tools to help us capture and share the visual experience. This research involves developing novel cameras with unusual optical elements, programmable illumination, digital wavelength control, and femtosecond analysis of light transport, as well as tools to decompose pixels into perceptually meaningful components. Raskar's research also involves creating a universal platform for the sharing and consumption of visual media.

Raskar received his PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he introduced "Shader Lamps," a novel method for seamlessly merging synthetic elements into the real world using projector-camera based spatial augmented reality. In 2004, Raskar received the TR100 Award from Technology Review, which recognizes top young innovators under the age of 35, and in 2003, the Global Indus Technovator Award, instituted at MIT to recognize the top 20 Indian technology innovators worldwide. In 2009, he was awarded a Sloan Research Fellowship. He holds 30 US patents and has received three Mitsubishi Electric Invention Awards.

Jack Tumblin joined the Department of Computer Science at Northwestern University as an Assistant Professor in September 2001, after two years as a postdoctoral Associate at the Program of Computer Graphics at Cornell University. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science in December, 1999 from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Tumblin has been an Associate Editor of ACM Transactions on Graphics (2001-2006), a member of the SIGGRAPH Papers Committee (2003-2004), and a Guest Editor of IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications (2001). He is co-founder of IVEX Corp., where his flight-simulator design work was granted five US patents.

One of the Seminal Novels in English

Samuel Richardson's massive 1747-8 novel, "Clarissa," is not only the longest novel I've ever read, but one of the best and most complex. Much like Richardson's first novel, "Pamela," "Clarissa" deals with the torments of a virtuous young lady abducted by a rake/libertine (in modern parlance, a rapist) who submits the heroine to a series of trials. Unlike Pamela, a lower class maiden, Clarissa is a member of an established and wealthy family. This change in social situation allows Richardson to explore a host of new issues, with the primary goal of moral didacticism remaining intact between the two.
Clarissa Harlowe, the most beautiful and exemplary of her sex, is being imposed upon by her implacable family to marry one Mr. Solmes, a man of no mean fortune, but whose ethics, especially with regard to his own family, are suspect. Simultaneously, Clarissa's sister, Arabella, has just rejected a proposal from one Robert Lovelace, the heir of a nobleman, educated and refined, but known for his libertinism - his tendency and enjoyment of seducing young women and then abandoning them. Lovelace falls in love, or in lust, with Clarissa, and after he and Clarissa's brother James, heir to the Harlowe fortune, engage in a near fatal duel, Clarissa's continued correspondence with Lovelace becomes a major thorn in the side of the Harlowes' plans for Clarissa. The Harlowes continue to urge the addresses of Mr. Solmes while vilifying Lovelace - Clarissa not approving of either - and when her family's insitence becomes insupportable to Clarissa, the utterly demonic Lovelace takes advantage, whisking her away from a seemingly inevitable union with Solmes. Thus begins an absolutely terrifying journey for Clarissa through the darkness of humanity, as Lovelace plots and executes his seduction of the 'divine' Clarissa.
An epistolary novel, "Clarissa" is written in the form of a series of letters spanning nine months, principally between Clarissa and her best friend and iconoclast, Anna Howe, and between Lovelace and a fellow libertine, John Belford. Richardson's 'to the moment' style of writing gives a minute account of everything that happens to the main characters almost as it happens, giving the novel a highly dramatic sense of urgency. The four major correspondents, as well as others, also give the novel a well-developed sense of perspective, as we get not only the events, but biased opinions and readings of all the other characters, making the events at times difficult to follow, but at the same time, marvelously rich and complex.
Some of the most interesting facets of this novel are its interactions with the law, primarily inheritance law, the contrast between history and story, and at the forefront, the debate over gender roles in marriage. Almost of a piece with the novel's legal issues, Richardson examines the vagueries of semantics - what do words mean? How are words regarded and used differently by men and women? Richardson also confronts the way we read and interpret 'truth' - in a book composed of letters, subjectively written and read, where can we look to for 'truth'?
Among the characters in the novel, by far the most captivating and challenging in "Clarissa" is the aforementioned Anna Howe. The ways she clashes with tradition and propriety throughout the novel are entertaining, and very much reminiscent of the eponymous heroine of Defoe's "Moll Flanders." An amazing and influential novel to say the least, anyone with a few weeks on their hands who is interested in the history of the novel in English should pick up and give "Clarissa" some serious attention, stat!

Read the UNABRIDGED Clarissa!

The UNABRIDGED Clarissa (Penguin ed.) is a powerful, moving eighteenth-century English masterpiece, the first great psychological novel. Its length may seem daunting and it does take at least six weeks to read, but you will be rewarded by finding yourself immersed in the minds of Clarissa and Lovelace. You will feel as though you are living in their world, facing their moral dilemmas, deciding on courses of action, predicting consequences. However, if you accidentally pick up the Sherburn ABRIDGEMENT of Clarissa, you will NOT be able to savor Richardson's famous "writing to the moment." If you doubt me, take a look at Mary Anne Doody and Florian Stuber's article, "Clarissa Censored," in the journal Modern Language Studies (1988). The abridgement is a travesty of Richardson's greatest novel.

Not a book to be read in abridgement--be patient!

Once you've read this book, you can barely read anything written in England post-1750 without finding and feeling Richardson's influence. An English epic, a sometimes infuriatingly detailed exploration of men and women under pressure, a masterfully crafted depiction of bewilderment, betrayal, and the kind of religious ecstasy that's difficult to read. Don't miss Letter 246. Stay with this book, even if it takes you weeks (it took me 7)--it's well worth it, a one-of-a-kind reading experience.

Another must read from Lisa Mondello

Let me first say that this a wonderfully touching book. It’s part of a series, but it’s a standalone that you will love.
Upon the death of Ian’s dear friends Carlos and Brenda, Ian goes to VT for their funeral and was summoned to the reading of their will. Abby , who has been taking care of the 3 children since the death of their parents, is summoned as well. They are advised that Ian is made the guardian of the children , and Abby has to live with the children and Ian for a year to help the transition. Also, the must try and contact Carlos’s family in Mexico. Abby is distressed, but for the sake of the children , will move to Dakota with Ian and the kids. Both Ian and Abby have had physical and emotional losses, but will do anything for the children.
Without giving much away, I will say you will not be disappointed with this book. Ms Mondello once again gives us another winner.

Dakota Hearts Series Book Six
Ian McKinnon is moving forward in his life after the military. He is focused on opening the Wounded Veterans Center to help others. And then he gets a message that once again changes his life.

Abby Townsend’s life has also changed once again. First she lost her husband and now her best friends. She can’t lose the only family she has left and will do whatever it takes to keep them. Even moving to another state with a very annoying man.

The reader has been given glimpses of Ian throughout this series. I really enjoyed reading his story. The author has done a good job of researching some of the aspects of having a prosthetic and how it would affect the character. I’m hoping we’ll get to see more of Ian’s family that we meet in this story in upcoming books.

Romantic and sweet. Loved it!

Loved the story of Ian and Abby. They both dealt will losses, and stayed closed up from love until they met each other. Beautiful story, that pulled me right in from the beginning. I read the whole book in one evening. Would have liked to read more like their wedding and future children, maybe that will be woven into another story. Either way? I would highly recommend this story.

and much more useful than I thought it would be

Surprisingly thicker than I expected, and much more useful than I thought it would be. There are 10 one-sided pages for palettes, 6 one-sided pages for recording some of your favorite gradients and blends, with 5 lines for listing the colors you used, and 5 blank pages of charts at the back for your own needs. This is separate from the sections for hair, skin, eyes, clothing, random items in nature, random items around the house. This is much more useful than I was expecting. Will buy again when I've filled this one up.

Excellent coloring aid

This is the coolest book. You get pages to chart your colors, create color wheels, log certain color blends with a place to show what colors you used to create the blend. Then there are pages of faces, eyes, hair styles, clothes, skin, nature and misc. Items and some blank charts. There are also a few blank pages in the back. I keep thus book next to me every time u color or watch a coloring video so I can catalog any color blends I discover and like . I also use the blank pages to record blends for wood, grass/leaves/trees, water and just pretty blends that I like I list the colors. This book is great to practice in because they give you several different shapes in every category for you to practice with. I use one of the color wheel pages to test my colors and how they look blended with another color. This book is packed full of stuff. It's worth every penny.

la perse au temps des romantiques

L'œuvre de Gobineau (1816-1882) est atypique. À la suite de la parution en 1853 de son "Essai sur l'inégalité des races humaines", Arthur-Joseph de Gobineau est considéré par certains comme le fondateur de l'aryanisme, à l'origine de l'idéologie nazie basée sur l'inégalité des "races" et la prétendue supériorité de ce que l'on appelle aujourd'hui l'homme occidental (ou en d'autres termes l'aryen). Pourtant, à la lecture de ses "Nouvelles asiatiques", on se trouve en face d'un observateur intelligent et surtout infiniment respectueux des mœurs et coutumes des peuples du Proche et du Moyen-Orient. Grand voyageur, diplomate en poste à Téhéran où il fut ministre plénipotentiaire, Gobineau a rencontré de nombreuses personnalités politiques et religieuses et étudié les coutumes des peuples musulmans du Proche et du Moyen Orient, dont il parlait couramment les langues. Les "Nouvelles asiatiques" sont donc l'œuvre d'un érudit, qui parle de ce qu'il a vu par lui-même ou appris de nombreux témoignages, mais également d'un conteur hors-pair. Injustement méconnue, étouffée qu'elle a été par l'exploitation à des fins politiques de ses écrits théoriques, l'œuvre romanesque de Gobineau mérite d'être appréciée pour sa vision romantique de l'Orient. On ne s'ennuie guère à la lecture de ces six nouvelles, toutes d'excellente facture, mais j'ai bien ri à la lecture de "La guerre des Turcomans" et ai pleuré à chaudes larmes sur "Les amants de Kandahar".
